Sri Vazhithunai Paneeswarar Temple / Sri Vazhithunai Paniswarar Temple, Athur, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

One more Temple in Gajabrushta Vimana / Gajaprishta Vimana Temples Group….


The Visit to this Sri Vazhithunai Paneeswarar Temple at Athur, near Chengalpattu was a part of “Shiva and Vishnu Temples Visit in and around Athur”, on 16th January 2024. This is one of the seven Shiva Temples and 3rd Shiva temple in and around Athur Village in Chengalpattu District.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a balipeedam and a Rishabam. A Vinayagar is on the left side of the sanctum sanctorum entrance. Moolavar is little big in size, on a round avudayar. No koshta images.

A Vinayagar and Chandikeswarar are in the praharam. 



ARCHITECTURE
The temple was rebuilt during recent years. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum and a mukha mandapam. Stucco image of kamakshi worshipping Shiva lingam is on the top of the mukha mandapam. An ekatala Gajaprishta / Gajabrushta Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar and Brahma are in the greeva koshtam.

A Ko sala is on the south side of the temple in the same premises.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the inscription inscribed at Sri Muktheeswarar temple of this Village Athur, both temples might have been constructed during the same period and belongs to 10th Century Chozha period.

இதே ஊரின் ஸ்ரீமுக்தீஸ்வரர் கோயிலில் உள்ள மூன்றாம் இராசராசனின் 28 ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டு ( பொயு 1244 ) தமிழ் கல்வெட்டு, ஆற்றூர் என்கிற இராசராசநல்லூர் ஊர் மக்களுக்கு மதுராந்தகப் பொத்தப்பிச் சோழன் ஆணையிட்டுள்ளச் செய்தி. இவ்வூர் வழித்துணையப்பன் ஈசுவரமுடையார் கோயிலுக்கு இரண்டு வேலி நிலம் குடிநீங்கா தேவதானமாக இறையிலியாகக் கொடுத்துள்ளான். இந்நிலங்களின் வரிவருவாயினை கோயில் தானத்தாரிடம் அளிக்க ஊர்ச் சபையினருக்கு ஆணையிட்டுள்ளான். இக்கல்வெட்டில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ள 28-வது ஆட்சி ஆண்டு மூன்றாம் இராசராசனுக்குரியது,

The Chozha King Rajaraja-III’s 28th reign year ( 1244 CE ) inscription records the order  to the Villagers by the Madurantaka Poththappi Chozha. The order is about the gift of 2 veli land to Vazhithunaiappan Eswaramudaiyar temple as Devadhana irayili. The order further states that the income from Tax income to be handed over to Temple Dhanathar, by the Village sabha.

It is believed that the temple was in dilapidated condition and one Mr Ragavaiya, who took initiative and reconstructed and consecrated / Kumbhabhishekam was conducted for 6 temples. 

The temple was reconstructed and maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 25th April 2010.

LEGENDS
This is a Parihara sthalam for the removal of marriage obstacles and Shiva is a varaprasathi for Child boon. 

It is believed that Shiva will accompany in all the endeavours of one’s life. Hence Shiva is called as Vazhi Thunai Paneeswarar.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala pooja special poojas are conducted on pradosham and Maha Shivaratri. The Kasi theertham is used for daily abhishekam.

Since Ko Sala is functioning, the temple will be kept opened always.

This Village Athur is on the Chengalpattu to Kanchipuram.  The Athur is about 7 KM from Chengalpattu, 35 KM from Kanchipuram, 40 KM from Tambaram and 64 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway station Reddipalayam / Palur and Junction is Chengalpattu.
