Thamaraipakkam Anaicut / Check Dam, Thamaraipakkam, Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

… a continuation post to Thamaraipakkam Shiva temple – a part of Pulicat Heritage Visit
 25th February 2017.
This Check dam at Thamaraipakkam was constructed to divert the Kosasthalaiyar River to Sholavaram and Puzhal reservoirs for Chennai’s drinking water needs. The check dam was constructed during the year 1868 CE with a sill level of 6640 and the crest level is 7240. There are 15 nos of manually operated sluice gates to divert the water to Puzhal reservoir The length of the sluice is 624 feet. Laterite stones are used for the construction of the sluice.

The check dam has automatic level control shutters to hold the water up to 15 feet. In addition to this, it has 4 manually operated shutters to release water into Kosasthalaiyar River. Of these 5 shutters are constructed 1928-1929 CE.

A PWD office was constructed in the year 1915 with a rainwater measuring system which is in dilapidated condition.
