Mahakavi
Subramania Bharathi was born in the year 1882 CE at Ettayapuram in Tirunelveli
District in Tamil Nadu and his original name was Subramaniyan. He had his
education at Tirunelveli and Varanasi. He learned music at the age of 11 and
learned to write Poetry. He was conferred with the title of Bharati. He
was a multifaceted personality as a poet, as a Journalist and as a Freedom
fighter, He worked in may journals and the important one is
Swadesamitran and Karmayogi.
He
was an active member of Indian National Congress. He was issued an arrest
warrant in the year 1908 by the British Govt., so he moved to Pondicherry, where
he lived till 1918. After that he lived in Triplicane, Chennai close
to Parthasarathy Temple. Everyday he used feed the temple elephant after
worshiping Sri Parthasarathy. One day he was attacked by the elephant
badly. Even though he survived from the incident, but he died in the year
1921 at the age of 38.
Tamil Nadu
Government bought the house in the year 1990, from the owner and
converted it, in to a permanent museum in the year 1993, The Museum
displays his works, photos with eminent personalities to whom he was
associated. The house was named as “Bharathi illam”, which is situated at
No:75, Thulasinga Perumal Koil Street, Triplicane.
