Sri Lakshmi Varadaraja Swami Temple / Varadaraja Swami Temple, Terakanambi, in Chamarajanagar District, Karnataka.

This Visit to this 14th Century Varadaraja Swami Temple on 22nd June 2019 was a part of ancient Shiva and Vishnu temple of Karnataka. After Hale Alur Sri Arkeshwara Temple’s visit we had been to this temple.


Moolavar : Sri Varadaraja Swami

Some if the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing with a 40 feet high Deepasthambham. A base of the Rajagopuram is in front of sanctum sanctorum ( Mottai Gopuram ) and the super structure is missing. The prastharam has the kabotham and yazhi vari. The sanctum sanctorum parapet has the arches with stucco images of Vishnu’s various forms / avatars.


ARCHITECTURE
The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala, arthamandapa and mukmandapa. Moolavar Sri Varadaraja Swami is in standing posture. Urchavars and Alwars are in the arthamandapa. Balipeda and Dwajasthambam are in the mukha mandapa. Thayar Sannidhi is on the right side of moolavar Sri Varadaraja Swami. In the mukamandapa sannadhi for Vinayagar, Garuda and Anjaneya / Hanuman.


HISTORY:
This place Terakanambi was ruled by Kadamba, Chozha, Hoysala, Vijayanagara and Mysuru Kings.  The Mysuru / Mysore King Sri Ranadheera Kantirava ( 1638 to 1713 CE ) was from this and spent his childhood days in this Village.  During his rule he  expands his territory up to Madurai.

Terakanambi had 12 ancient temples and 9 temples are alive now. This temple Sri Varadaraja Swami temple was built by Madhava Dandanayaka son of Perumal Dana Nayaka in the year 1303 CE. Further expanded during Vijayanagara period. South part of the temple was extended by Krishnaraja Wodeyar. In 2000 ruined portion of the temple was reconstructed at a cost of Rupees 96 lakhs through Sri Veerendra Heggade the founder of Dharamsala Margunatha Dharrottana Trust, Jeernodhara Samithi of Karnataka Govt. and Local people.
  
TEMPLE TIMINGS:
The temple will be kept open between 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 16.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH:
The temple is 20 KM from Gundlupet, 30 KM from Chamarajanagar and 210 KM from Bengaluru / Bangalore.
Nearest Railway Station is Chamarajanagar.
