HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple was believed to have been built during the early Pallava / Pandyas period ie between the 6th to 8th Centuries and received contributions from Medieval Chozhas, Vijayanagaras, and Madurai Nayaks.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Chandra fell in love with Devas Guru Pirakaspathi’s wife Dhara, even though he knows the acts were  adharma, punishment of pushing him to Naraka loka, etc,. They spent nights together. Pragaspathi complained to Brahma. Brahma scolded him relieved Dhara from Chandran and handed over to Pragaspathi. In the meantime, she became pregnant and gave birth to a child, called Budhan.  Pragaspathi cursed Chandra to diminish his powers and get Shayaroga. Chandra begs pardon from Pragaspathi. Pragaspathi gave the solution for the curse, he had to go to Bhoolok where Vishnu graces in a temple Sugantha Vana on the banks of river Kaveri. Chandra worshiped Vishnu and Vishnu blessed him to get back his powers.

In another legend. Thirumangai Alwar was a little late for the darshan of Vishnu. Vishnu closed the door and didn’t give darshan. Thirumangai Alwar argued with Vishnu to give darshan. Vishnu asked him to sing a hymn in praise of him. Thirumangai Alwar argued, that how can he compose a hymn without seeing the beauty of Vishnu. At one stage when Thirumangai Alwar was about to leave the temple, Vishnu prolonged the argument. So, Vishnu told him that, when he can praise other Divya Desam without going there, why cannot sing a hymn in praise of Vishnu of this temple also. Finally, Thirumangai Alwar composed 10 Pasurams describing and praising Lord Vishnu of this temple. Vishnu gave darshan to Thirumangai Alwar.
