The visit to this Sri
Manigandeeshwarar Temple was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on
21st February 2020. The temple is, at Ennaikaran area a part of Kanchipuram
City on the Kanchipuram to Chengalpattu
main Road. In Kanchipuram composed by the 18th Century Sivagnana
Swamigal, in which he narrates how Lord Shiva drank the alakala visham / poison
which came out from Vasuki.

features of this temple are...
The temple us facing
wast with an entrance mandapam from South side. Stucco image of Shiva and
Parvati as Rishabaroodar is on the entrance. A Vinayagar Sannidhi is in the entrance mandapa. Balipeedam and Nandhi are in front of the
Temple. A meta colour sheet mandapa is on the south side of Nandi mandapam and
balipeedam. Chandran and Suriyan are in the artha mandapam. In koshtam Durgai,
Brahma, Mahavishnu, Dakshinamurthy and Vinayagar.
In prakaram
Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Nagars with Vinayagar, Markandeyar,
Bhairavar, Padavettamman, Sundrambal,
Panamanneeswarar and Kanikandeeswarar.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists
of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and a maha mandapam. The Adhisthana is on a simple padabandha
adhisthana with tripatta kumuda. Padmam is shown below the jagathi in the
upapedam. The prastaram is of Kapotha style with nasi kood. Bhuta vari is in
the valabi. A 2 tier Vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. There is no
separate Bhoomi Desam and the Vimana starts from prastaram. The Sanctum
sanctorum walls are supported with Vishnu kantha pillars with kalasam, kumbam, palakai with padmam,
veera kandam and Vettu pothyal on the top.
HISTORY.
The original temple
may belongs to 8th to 9th Century, Pallava period and
completely reconstructed with stone during Chozha period. The Mandapa walls are
built with sand stone or might have retained the Pallava structure. There is no
inscriptions found to prove its antiquity.
LEGEND
As per Kanchi purana,
Lord Shiva drank the poison which came from Vasuki during the process of
churning the milk ocean. Due to this Lord Shiva had become in blue colour and
called as Neela kaNdan or Neelamanimidatran.
Devas realized that Lord Shiva drank the poison, for them, So they came
to earth installed a Shiva Linga at this place and worshiped. Hence Lord Shiva is called as Manikandeeswarar. Also Vasuki created pond ( Vasuki Theertham )
and worshiped Lord Shiva with gems and diamonds.

kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs

TO REACH:
This temple is on the
Kanchipuram to Chengalpattu main road.
The temple is about
2.5 KM from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 4.0 Km from Kanchipuram Railway station,
37.5 KM from Arakkonam and 70 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway
Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
