The visit to this Vanneeshwarar Temple at Pillayarpalayam was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. After Mutheeswarar Temple ‘s Visit, our next destination was to this temple on the parallel street of Pudupalayam St, ie Krishnan St. The 18^th Century Sivagnana Swamigal had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchi puranam. வன்னீச வரலாறு

மூதழற் கடவுள் தன்னுடன் பிறந்த முன்னவர்

மும்மையர் உள்ளார்

பேதுறா மதுகை மூவரும் விண்ணோர் பெறுமவி

சுமக்கலாற் றாது

மேதகும் ஆவி இறந்தனர் அதனை விரிதழற்

பண்ணவன் நோக்கி

யாதினிப் புரிவல் எனக்குமிவ் விடும்பை யெய்துமே

யென்றுள மழுங்கி

மகோததி யனைய ஐயரம் பையர்தம் (மகோததி – பெரிய கடல்)

வாவியி னுள்ளுறக் கரந்து

சகோதரர் தம்மை இழந்தவன் றனக்குச்

சகோதரம் நீதடம் புனேல

உகாதெனைப் புரத்தி யென்றுரைத் தங்கண்

உறைந்தனன் அன்றுதொட் டளிகள்

முகேரனப் பாயும் மலர்த்தடம் அதற்கு

மொழிபெயர் சகோதர தீர்த்தம்.

எரிதழற் புத்தேள் அன்னணம் உறைய இமையவர்

எங்கணுந் துருவிப்

பெரிதிளைப் பெய்தி யாண்டுவந் துறலும் பெருந்தடத்

துறையுமீன் அவர்க்குத்

தெரிதர வியம்பிற் றாகவெங் கனலோன் செயிர்த்தடைக்

கலம்புகுந் தேனைப்

பரிவுறக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்தநீர் தூண்டிற் படுகொலை

யுறுகெனச் சபித்து

* மீன்கள் அக்கினி தேவனைத் தங்களுக்குக் காட்டினைமயால்

தேவர்கள் அவற்றிற்கு இமையாநாட்டம் அளித்தனர் என்ப.

மின்னெ வெளிக்கொண் டிரந்துநின் றைழக்கும்

விண்ணவர் தங்களை நோக்கி

முன்னுறப் போமின் வருவெலன் றியம்பி முளரிநீர்த்

தடமதன் கரையின்

மன்னுவன் னீச வள்ளலை யிருத்தி மரபுளி

யருச்சனை யாற்றி

அன்னவன் அருளாற் பெற்றனன் இமையோர்

அவியெலாஞ் சுமந்திடு மாற்றல்

தமையன்மார் மூவர் சுமக்கலாற் றாது

தளர்வுறும் அவியெலாந் தானே

கைமயுறப் பொருக்கும் மதுகைபெற் றிமையோர்

குழாத்தினுட் கலந்தனன் கனலோன்

இமையவில் வாங்கிப் புரிசைமூன் றிருத்த

யெந்தைவன் னீசனை யண்மி

அமைவரும் அன்பால்வழி படப்பெற்றோர்

அருந்திறல் எய்திவீ டடைவார்.

Moolavar : Sri Vanneeshvarar

Some of the Salient features of this temple are.....

The temple is facing east with an entrance arch. Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati in sitting posture on the top of the arch. Balipredam and Nandi are immediately after the entrance arch in the open Mukha mandapa. Moolavar is swayambhu. Somaskandar panel is on the back side wall of the moolavar / Sanctum Sanctorum, which is a regular features of all Pallava Period Shiva temples.

In Prakaram Vinayagar and Chandikeswarar. Happened to see two sculptures of one is Thirugnanasambandar with thalam, in sitting posture. The other sculpture is a Nadukal/ a memorial stone or a Satikal. In this the hero is holding a sword in his right hand. Both are wearing ornaments on their neck and elongated ears. The tuft is shown in up direction. As per the historians this may belongs to 16^th to 17^th Century. How and what is the connection to this temple is not known.

HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE

With the presence of Somaskandar panel behind the moolavar, this temple might have been constructed during Pallava period and latter re-constructed during Vijayanagara / locals. The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and an open mukha mandapa. The present structure was constructed with brick and cement concrete.
