Abhimuktheeswarar Temple / Sri Abhi Muktheeswarar Temple / அபிமுக்தீஸ்வரர் கோவில், Thirupperuvelur / Manakkal Ayyampettai / மணக்கால் ஐயம்பேட்டை, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 209^th Thevaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and the 92^nd Sthalam on the south side of the river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. Now this place is called Manakkal Ayyampet(tai).

In Periyapuranam, Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thalayalangadu. But Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruvanjiyam.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…

The temple faces east with a three-tier Rajagopuram. Kodimara Vinayagar, Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam, and Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram. Moolavar is of swayambhu, and a Jala is provided on the opposite to moolavar sannadhi. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mirukandu Maharishi, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai (is in a separate sannathi). Utsavars are in antarala.

In the outer praharam, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Vinayagar, and Maha Vishnu as Vaikunda Narayana Perumal. In the Lower level Navagrahas, Shaniswaran, Kshethra Bhairavar, Suriyan, Nalvar, Maha Lingam, Saraswateeswarar, Jambukeswarar, Iravateeswarar, Brahmapureeswarar, and Durgai. On the upper level, Somaskandar, Natarajar Sabha in a vavval nethi mandapa, Dwara Vinayagar is on a pillar.  

Ambal is in a separate temple facing east in Veerasana sitting posture. Ambal is with 4 hands in abhaya and varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple was built by Ko-chengat-Chozhan, of Mada Koil type, about 10 feet above the ground level with 17 steps. A single-tier vesara vimana is over the sanctum. The upper level consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and a Vavval Nethi ardha mandapam.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

Since Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal have sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have existed before the 7^th Century. Also, this temple was constructed as a mada-style temple, believed that the original temple been constructed by Ko Chengat Chozha and later reconstructed as a stone temple during the Chozha period.

LEGENDS

It is believed that Maha Vishnu, Murugan, Gauthamar, Birungi Munivar, Agasthiyar, and Sukran worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Since Sukran worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple, this is a Sukran parihara sthalam.

Lord Muruga worshiped Shiva; hence, this place is called Peruvelur, also called “Bhuloka Skandapuri”. It was said that this place obtained the name Ayyampettai since Lord Shiva is also called “Ayyan”. 

Also, there was a king called Peruvel, who ruled this place. Hence, this place was called Peruvelur with the addition of – Oor - ஊர்.

In one of the legends, there was a conflict between Vayu and Adhiseshan regarding who was greater. It was decided to hold Mount Kailash by Adhiseshan, and Vayu had to blow up. In the process, a piece had fallen down in this place, and the temple was a part of the hill. Adhiseshan also worshiped Lord Shiva, hence he is praised as “Seshapureeswarar”. 

Maha Vishnu took the form of Mohini on many occasions to vanquish the asuras. He came to this temple and worshiped lord Shiva to get back his original appearance. 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from regular poojas, Skanda Sashti is celebrated in a grand manner. Special poojas are conducted on Vaikasi Visakam in the month of Vaikasi (May – June), Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month of Avani (Aug – Sept), Skanda Sashti in the month of Aippasi (Oct – Nov), Thirukarthigai in the month of Karthigai (Nov – Dec), Thaipoosam in the month of Thai (Jan – Feb), Maha Shivaratri in the month of Masi (Feb – March), and monthly pradosams.

HOW TO REACH: 

The place Manakkal Ayyampet is on  the Thiruvarur to Kumbakonam road, bus route. All the buses from Thiruvarur to Kumbakonam pass through this village. The temple is about 1 km off the Main Road.

The Temple is 9.3 km from Thiruvarur, 31 km from Kumbakonam,  43.7 km from Mayiladuthurai, and 325 km from Chennai.

The nearest Railway Station is Thiruvarur.
