On the way to Sri Meenakshi
Sundareswarar Temple, happened to see this Gandhi Square and Mahar Nombu Thidal,
an important place of Karaikudi.
Gandhi Square and Maharnonbu Pottal are
in the heart of the City of Karaikudi. Many historical events have happened in this
place. Sri Subramania Bharati, the great Poet, and freedom fighter visited Karaikudi in 1906. Composed and sang a poem in praise of Nattukottai Chettiar
Youths for their contribution to the development of the Karaikudi region.
Mahatma Gandhi also visited in 1927 and
delivered the two historical speeches. In 1948, the First Prime Minister of
Independent India addressed this place, when he came for the inauguration
of CECRI (Central Electro Chemical Research Institute).
This Gandhi statue with the Mandapam was constructed and declared open by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 17th July 1955. The construction expenses are contributed by the employees of the Municipality
A Lamp ( …? ) with a pedestal was also
erected near the Homage memorial stupi. This was gifted by Mei. Aa. Annamalai
Chettiar on 18th February 1916.
An homage memorial Stupi was erected for
those noble stalwarts whose service and
Sacrifice made India free on Independence Day 15th August 1947.
