The Visit to this Sri Kandeeswarar Temple at Velangudi near Karaikudi was a part of Shiva, Vishnu Temples of
Pudukkottai and Sivagangai Districts Visit on 23rd & 24th
September 2023. This Sri Kandeeswarar Temple, is one
of the 9 Shiva temples of Nattukottai Nagarathars in Sivaganga District.

Some of the salient features of this Temple are...
The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram
and an entrance arch on the south side with stucco images of Shiva &
Parvati’s kalyana kolam. A Vinayagar and Murugan sannidhis are on both sides of
the east side Rajagopuram. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and Rishabam are after the
East side Rajagopuram under the mukha mandapam. Dwarapalakas are at the
entrance of ardha mandapam. Moolavar is little small on a round avudayar. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy,
Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
Ambal Kamakshi is facing south before the Shiva
Temple. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.
In praharam Nalvar, Somaskandar, Siddhi Vinayagar,
Sri Valli Devasena Murugan, Mahalakshmi, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Chandran
and Suriyan.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala,
ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a upanam and
adhistanam with jagathy, vrudha kumudam and pattikai. The Koshtas are patra
kostas with kadaka kumudam. The Bhitti starts with Vedika. The pilasters are
Vishnu kantha pilasters with square base & Nagabandham, kalasm, kudam,
Lotus petals mandi palaka and Pushpa pothyal. 12 Rasis bas relief is on the
ceiling after the rajagopuram. Kumbha panjaras are out side antarala wall. The
3 tier vesara Vimanam was constructed with bricks and cement concrete, on the
sanctum sanctorum.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
As
per Sivagangai Mavatta Tholliyal Kaiyedu, There was a Shiva temple in dilapidated
condition with lot of inscriptions on the North side of this Village. The same
was reconstructed at a cost of Rs 10.5 Lakhs and Maha Kumbhabhishekam was
conducted on 18th May 1937.
This
is one of the 9 Shiva temples of Nattukottai Nagarathars. As per the inscription, Nagarathars of Ratna
Makuda dhana vaisiya Sigamani’s
contribution to Ponmani porpudaitha Thirupani and Maha kumbhabhishekam was
conducted on Kaliyuga 5318, Eswara year
Aani month ( May month ) 18th day. Gregorian year 1937.
The flooring
was done by Se. Pisa. Sa Pichchappa
Manikandan and after completion of thirupani maha kumbhabhishekam was
conducted on 02nd February 2006.
LEGENDS
As per the Sivagangai Mavatta Tholliyal Kaiyedu,
once this place was a part of forest and Murugan alias Velan worshipped Shiva.
Hence this place obtained the name of Velangudi.

conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri days, Fridays, amavasya days etc.

Ariyakudi Arulmigu Tiruvengadamuadaiyan Temple, 7 KM from Karaikudi Bus stand.
Nearest railway station is Karaikudi.
