The Visit to this Sri Vairavar Swamy Temple
at Vairavanpatti near
Karaikudi was a part of Shiva, Vishnu Temples of Pudukkottai and Sivagangai Districts Visit on 23rd & 24th September 2023. This
is one of the 9 Shiva temples of Nattukottai Nagarathars. Even though this
temple was dedicated to Shiva, importance, and poojas are done mainly to
Bairavar also called Vairavar. Hence this place is also called Vairavanpatti.

Some of the salient features of this Temple are...
The temple faces east with a 5-tier
Rajagopuram. A Vinayagar temple is on the left side, and a mandapam and the
temple tank are in front of the temple. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam, and Rishabam
are immediately after the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas, Vinayagar, Subramaniar are
at the entrance of Maha mandapam. Moolavar in the sanctum is on a square
avudayar. In Koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai
are in the koshtam.
In Praharam Ambal Periya Nayaki, Bairavar with a
separate Kodimaram /Dwajasthambam, Palliyarai, 63var, Somaskandar, Valaroli
Vinayagar, Kasi Viswanathar Visalakshi, Sri Valli Devasena Arumugar, Sri Valli
Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Mahalakshmi, Saraswati, Adi Avudai Nayaki
with Rishabam, Bairavar, Chandran, Suryan, and Navagrahas.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala,
ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a upanam and
adhistanam. The Adhistanam is on a padma peetam, jagathy, kumudam and pattika.
The Bhitti starts with vedika. Pilasters are with square bases with Nagabandham, kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, palakai, and Pushpa pothyal. The
Kostas are Padra Kostas in sala style. The prastaram consists of madhalai
valapi, kapotam with Nasi kudus, and yazhi vari. The Nasi kudus has beautiful miniature
bas-reliefs of Shiva’s various forms, and Mahavishnu’s avatars, and the puranas are
sculpted beautifully. Kumbha panjaras are in karna pathi and out side of
antarala wall. A 3 tier brick vimana is
on the sanctum sanctorum.
As per Sivagangai Mavatta Tholliyal Kaiyedu, The
temple measures 298’ X 198’ and the front
face measures 199’ X 196. The Height of the Rajagopuram is 60’.9”.
The Bairavar sannidhi and Dakshinamurthy’s shrine /
Kostas are built with black granite stones.
The central part of the temple and the corridor
parivara sannidhis are elevated from the ground level. The circumambulatory
path is around the central shrine. The Corridors are supported by stone
pillars with exquisitely carved bas-reliefs of various deities, Rishis, munis,
animals, flowers, etc.
Pillars (from the ceiling pothyal, baravahas) and ceilings are painted colorfully. Bairavar and Shiva & Parvati, Kalyana
Kolam, etc, are painted on the ceiling.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the Sivagangai
Mavatta Tholliyal Kaiyedu, This place was
existed before 11th Century. The 11th Century
inscriptions in Vattezhuthu on a stone slab record the Name of Shiva as
“Thirumayanathevar”.
Jadavarman
Sundara Panyan’s period ( 13th Century ) inscriptions record the
gift of land to this temple after purchase. Also, the inscription mentions the
money under circulation was called Chozhiyanar “Pazhangkasu”.
This
is one of the 9 Shiva temples of Nattukottai Nagarathars. As per the inscription, the temple thirupani (re-constructed) was built in the year 1864 CE.
Electric Lighting is provided to this temple on
16th September 1947, by the Theyinar clan of Nattukottai
Nagarathars.
Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 31st
January 1982, 9th February 1996, 20th August 2008, and 06th
February 2022.
LEGENDS
As per the legends when the Asuras tortured the
Devas, sought the help of Shiva to escape from the Asuras. Shiva advised devas to come
to this place dense forest once. Devas came to this dense forest and found
Shiva and Parvati as Valarolinathar and Periyanayaki. Shiva destroyed the
Asuras and saved the Devas.

Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted
on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Amavasya, Pournami,
Nataraja Abhishekam, Ashtami theipirai, Navaratri, Sashti, Panguni Uthiram,
etc,.

This Sri Valarolinathar also called Vairavar
Swamy Temple at Vairavanpatti, is about 2.3 KM from Pillayarpatti Sri Karpaga
Vinayagar Temple, 8 KM Jeyangkonda Soleeswarar Temple Nemam, 5.5 KM from
Kundrakudi Murugan Temple and 17 KM from Karaikudi.
