The
Visit to this Maha Vishnu’s Dasavathara Temple also called Sri Sara Narayana Perumal Temple, was a part
of the “Shiva, Vishnu and Amman Temples Visit, in and around Kumbakonam”, on 14th
July 2024.
Mangalasasanam of this temple was done by Nammalwar ( 3194.. 3204 ) and Thirumangai Alwar Thirumangai Alwar ( 27 pasurams, on Sarngapani
Temple and some of them are.. 949, 954,
991,…) along with Sarngapani
Temple.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas images are on both
sides of the Rajagopuram. Stucco Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the sanctum
sanctorum. Moolavar is in standing posture with Shanka and Chakra and Abhaya
and Kadi hastam. Shankha and Chakra are interchanged from the usual position.
Maha
Vishnu’s 10 avatars/Dasavatar images are installed in the sanctum sanctorum.
In
praharam Visvaksenar, Nammalvar, Vihanasar, Brihu, Marisha maharishi,
Kashyappar, Athiri maharishi, Sri Rajagopalan with Sengamalavalli Thayar, and
Hanuman.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and Mukha mandapam. The sanctum
sanctorum is square in shape to accommodate 10 Avatar images of Maha Vishnu.
The Sanctum Sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with Jagathy, three patta
kumudam, and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are
Brahmakantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, mandi, and Poo mottu pothyal. The
prastaram consists of Valapi, Kapotam
and Viyyalavari ( not as usual ). From adhistanam to prastaram the
temple was built with stone. The 2-tier Vimanam was built with bricks. The
Sigaram is of Nagara style. There are no images on the Vimanam.
Dancers in various dancing posture images are on the mandapam wall.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is believed that this temple belongs to the 16th to 17th
Century, built by Vijayanagara Nayakas. A Nayaka King and his wives' images are
in the Rajagopuram.
Nayaka
period paintings are seen on the walls after the Rajagopuram.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that the first Guru Vihanasar, was born about 4 lakhs years ago with
Shankha and Chakra. With his 4 disciples, established the Vikansa agama for
conducting Poojas and Kulam & Gothra of Vaishnavism.
With
the 10 avatar images of Maha Vishnu, this temple is a Navagraha parihara and a
Kadaka Rasi Temple. Maha Vishnu in this temple, holds Shankha and Chakra not in
the usual potion, considered as a Thiripura Samharar with arrow. Maha Vishnu as
Sara Narayana Perumal with 10 Avatar blesses the Devotees.

Vaishnava functions

This Dasavathara
Perumal Temple is on TSR Big Street ( Periya Kadai Veethi ) in Valayapettai
Agraharam, a part of Kumbakonam City.
This
temple is about 2 KM from Kumbakonam Bus Stand, 2.5 KM from Kumbakonam Railway Station,
34.2 KM from Mayiladuthurai, and 38 KM from Thanjavur.
Nearest
Railway Station is Kumbakonam.
