Pulikuthikal / Hero stones, Ayyanar Sculptures and Jyeshta Devi around Kangeyam ( புலி குத்தி கற்கள், அய்யனார் மற்றும் ஜேஷ்டா தேவி சிலைகள், காங்கேயம் அருகே) – A Heritage Visit around Kangeyam, Tiruppur District. Tamil Nadu.

தமிழக மரபுசார் தன்னார்வலர்  குழுவுடன் இணைந்து கோவையில் இருந்து பொள்ளாச்சி வரை உள்ள சரித்திர முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த இடங்களை 14 ந்தேதி ஏப்ரல் மாதம் 2017 அன்று கண்டோம்.  அதுபற்றிய விபரங்களை முந்தைய பதிவுகளில் எழுதி இருந்தேன். அதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக 16ந் தேதி  பவானி சாகர் அணையின் உள்ளே உள்ள தர்மநாயக்கன் கோட்டையைக் காண திட்டம் இட்டு இருந்தோம். தவிர்க முடியாத காரணத்தால் அது நிறுத்தப்பட,  அதற்கு மாற்றாக 16ந்தேதி அன்று பல்லடத்தில் பல்லடம் தமிழ் சங்கம் சார்பில் நடத்தப்பெற்ற ராசேந்திர சோழனின் 1000மவது ஆண்டு அரியனை ஏறிய விழாவிற்க்கு சென்று இருந்தோம்.  சென்னை திரும்ப ஈரோடில் இருந்து இரவு 9 மணிக்கு கிளம்பும் ஏற்காடு விரைவு தொடர் வண்டியில் பதிவு செய்து இருந்ததால் மதிய உணவுக்குப் பின்பு அங்கு இருந்து கிளம்பி விட்டோம்.. திரு காளியப்பன், திருமதி சக்திபிரகாஷ், செல்வி ஆதிரை அவர்களின் வேண்டுகோளைத்  தட்ட முடியாமல், காங்கயத்திற்கு அருகே உள்ள சரித்திர முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த புலிகுத்தி கற்களையும், அய்யனார் சிலைகளையும் காணச் சென்றேன்.

The Coimbatore Heritage visit along with Tamilnadu Heritage forum  was planned for 3 days between 14^th April to 16^th April 2017. Since the 16^th April visit was cancelled,  utilizing this opportunity, attended the Palladam Rajendra Chozha’s 1000^th year crowning function organised by the Palladam Tamil Sangam and Gangaikonda Chozhapuram mempattu kazhakam.  The function was scheduled to end around 21.00 hrs. Since I booked my return journey ticket from Erode through Yercaud express, which  scheduled to depart by 21.00 hrs. So decided to skip the post lunch program.  Mr Kaliyappan, Mrs Sakthi Prakash and Miss Aathirai asked me join with them  to visit some of the Pulikuthi kal and Ayyanar statues around Kangayam. Decided to join with them and thought it might be easy to catch the train at Erode.

Hired a Maruthi Omni visited the sites  and enjoyed the hospitality of Miss Aathirai’s father and Mother extended to us at their farm and the vegetables, before departing to Erode. Since it was Sunday evening we found very difficult to get the bus, but managed to reach Erode 30 minutes before the train departure.

PULIKUTHI  KAL AT KODUVAI, ALAGUMALAI, PERUNTHOLUVU NEAR KANGAYAM / KANGAYAM

புலிக்குத்தி கற்கள் என்பது தாங்கள் வளர்க்கும் ஆடு மாடுகளை காப்பாற்ற அதைக்கொன்று சாப்பிடவரும் புலிகளை கொல்வதும் அப்படி கொல்லும் போது அந்த மனிதன் மரணம் அடைந்தால் அந்த வீரனின் நினைவாக நடப்படும் கற்களே புலிக்குத்திக் கற்கள் எனப்படும். ஒருகாலத்தில் காங்கயமும் அதைச் சுற்றி இருந்த இடங்களும் வனமாகவும் அதில் சிங்கம் புலி போன்ற மிருகங்களும் இருந்து இருக்கின்றன. அக்காடுகளில் உள்ள கிராமங்களில் ஆடு, மாடுகளை வளர்த்து வந்தனர். அதற்கு சாட்ச்சியாக இப்போது  இருக்கும் பெருந்தொழுவு என்ற கிராமமும் அங்கு உள்ள புலிகுத்தி கல்லும். தமிழில் ஆடு மாடுகளைக் கட்டும் இடத்தை தொழுவம் என்று அழைக்கப்படும்.

We had seen 3 pulikuthi kals in a radius  of 15 KM around Kangayam, still some may be there unexplored. Since Kangeyam is surrounded by small hills like SivanMalai, Chennimalai, etc.,  once this place might be a thick forest and lot of wild animals. In the forest small hamlets with cattle which used to graze. One of the Village   Peruntholuvu, where we had seen a Pulikuthikal,  indicates that there might be a big place to keep the cattle in large numbers during those days. In the process of protecting the cattle from tigers some of the men would have lost their lives. In remembrance of those dead these Pulikuthikals were erected.

This Pulikuthikal was lying out side the premises of Kasi Lingeswarar Siva Temple in broken condition. This has some inscriptions which are not legible to read.        

This Pulikuthikal is in good shape erected on the road side, with inscriptions on the top. Local People worship this Pulikuthikal.

This Pulikuthikal is in front of a Perumal temple at Peruntholuvu ( பெருந்தொழுவு ), half buried. Since this is in-front of Perumal temple, local people applied thiruman. 

AYYANAR STATUES / SCULPTURES
காங்கேயம் முற்காலத்தில் வணிகப் பாதையில் இருந்த ஒரு ஊர். ரோமாணியர்களும் கிரேக்கர்களும் விலை உயர்ந்த கற்களுக்கும் இரும்பால் செய்யப்பட்ட சாமான்களுக்கும் ( கொடுமணல் ) கேரள கடற்கரை வழியாக வந்து வியாபாரம் செய்தனர். பல நாட்டு மக்களின் பழக்கங்கள் அவர்களின் வழிபாடு போன்ற தாக்கம் இங்கும் இருந்தது. அதில் அய்யனார் வழிபாடும் ஒன்று. நான் முன்பு பார்த்த அய்யனார் சிலைகளுக்கும் இன்று பார்த்ததிற்க்கும் நிறைய வித்தியாசங்கள் இருந்தது. இன்று பார்த்தவற்றில் அய்யனார் தனியாக இல்லாமல் தன்னுடைய மனைவிமார்கள் பூர்னா & புஷ்கலாவுடன் இருந்தனர் மேலும் இரு பெண்கள் சாமரம் வீசிக்கொண்டு இருந்தனர். அவற்றில் கன்டான் கோவிலில் இருந்த அய்யனார் வழிபாட்டில் உள்ளார்.

Kangeyam is   on the ancient and latter trade route where Gems, iron articles were exported to Rome from Kodumanal areas through western sea shore ( Kerala ). Since Ayyanar is a protecting god we had seen Ayyanar at two places near Kangayam, of which one is in good shape and local people worship Ayyanar. These two Ayyanars are with consorts Poorna and Pushkala. The Ayyanars what I had seen near Erode are not with his consort.

This Ayyanar is at Kandiankoil. This Ayyanar with his consort are under worship and is in good shape.

This Ayyanar is at Chinnaripatti Sri Mangalambigai sametha Sri Mathaveeswarar  Shiva temple. Since this was broken, kept out side the temple along with other statues. One Nandhi is also there with inscription.  

JYESHTA DEVI AND AN INSCRIPTION STONE 

In addition to the Pulikuthikal we had seen a Jyeshta Devi with Maanthan and Agnimatha relief panel outside the Perunthozhu Shiva temple. The Jyeshta devi or Thavvai thai has no big belly which is found in other places. Also Maanthan and agni matha seems to be in standing posture  In addition to this we had seen a sasana kal or Tablet contain the order in front of a Shiva Temple at Alagumalai Shiva temple   

Jyeshta Devi at Peruntholuvu Shiva Temple. இங்கு இருக்கும் ஜேஷ்டா தேவி என்ற தவ்வை தாயார் மற்ற இடங்களில் காணப்படும் அமைப்பான பெருத்த வயிறு, திரட்சியான தொடைகள், பெரிய மார்பகங்கள் இன்றி சாதாரண கடவுளர்களின் அமைப்பையே ஒட்டி காணப்பட்டது, வலது கை மலரை ஒன்றைப்பிடித்து இருப்பது போலவும் இடது கை தொடைமீது இருத்தி இருந்தது. மாந்தனும் மாந்தியும் நின்ற கோலத்தில் இருப்பதைப் போல செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது.
