Sri Bhutapureeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீபெரும்புதூர் பூதபுரீசுவரர் கோயில், ஸ்ரீபெரும்புதூர் / Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Bhutapureeswarar temple at Sriperumbudur was a part of visit to the Temples and heritage sites around Kanchipuram, scheduled on 10th July 2021. This temple at Sriperumbudur is on the Chennai – Bangalore / Mumbai National Highway. This place was called as Bhutapuri during puranic period.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with entrances on the east and west sides. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Nandhi are in front. Since entrance to the shrine is from South, a Jala is provided on the east side wall. Moolavar is in the sanctum sanctorum. In koshtam Maha Ganapathi, Dakshinamurthy ( as medha Dakshinamurthy ), Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In Prakaram, Nagars and Putramman ( Ant hill Amman ) are under a peepal tree on the left side of the east side entrance, Vara siddhi Vinayagar, Mandapam with Nataraja’s stucco image, Sri Valli, Devasena Subramaniar, Anjaneyar, Chandikeswarar  and Navagrahas.

Ambal Sri Soundaravalli is in a separate sannidhi / temple on the left side of Moolavar also facing east like moolavar. Stucco Dwarapalakis are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum.

In artha mandapam Dwarapalakas, Nataraja with Sivagami and Manickavasagar, Two Kala Bhairavar of which, one Bhairavar do not have the Dog, Nalvar and Veerabhadra. Ardha mandapa Pillars has the bas-reliefs of Vyagrapathar, Pathanjali, Bhairavar, Uma maheswarar, Shiva and Parvati as Rishabaroodar,  Dakshinamurthy worshiped by Munis, Shiva and Parvati’s marriage / Thirukalyanam, Kali’s narthanam, Kinnara Bird, etc.  The south side entrance mandapa Pillars has the bas-reliefs of Gaja Samhara Moorthy, Kannappar purana, Arjuna's penance, etc.  The Ardha mandapa ceiling has the bas reliefs of Patanjali, Vyaghrapada and Munis / Rishis.

ARCHITECTURE
The Temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala and artha mandapam. Stucco images of Lord Shiva and Parvati with Vinayaka and Murugan are on the top of the both side entrance mandapam. The adhisthana is of simple padabandha adhisthana with three patta Kumuda. The sanctum sanctorum was built with stone up to prastaram. Nasikoods on the kapotham are with various images like Bhutas, Shiva related reliefs are carved. There is no images or lotus petals in the valabi. Koshta Durgai mandapa / shrine was added during recent years.
The super structure ie a 3 tier vesara Vimana above Bhoomi Desam was built with brick.  Stucco images of Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma and Vimanam thangis are on the Vimanam.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
This place was mentioned as Bhutapuri in Skanda purana.  It is believed that the original temple was built during Pallava period ( Parameswara varman ) and extended by Chozhas and Vijayanagara's. The adhisthana has the 16th to 17th Century inscriptions, which means the original temple might have reconstructed. This place was called as Kaithavachaturvedi mangalam. 

Vijayanagara King Vijayakanda Gopala's 28th reign year inscription records that Chozhaganga Devar gifted lands ( குடிநீங்கா தேவதானமாக ) to Bhutheesvaramudaya Nayanar, as per Kings order. ( ARE 203 of 1922 ). 

The inscription on the west side of the sanctum ( Sakam 1182 ie 1260 CE ) refers this place as Jayangonda Chozhamandalathu Chengattu Kottathu Makanur Nattu Perumbudur Kaitha Chaturvedimangalam ( ARE 203 of 1922 ). The inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp in front of Bhutheeswaramudayar for which 3 cows are gifted by a Merchant ( ARE 204 of 1922 ). 

Sundara Pandia's 15th reign year ( 1268 CE ) inscription records that Chengattu kottam Makanur Nattu Irungulam village was gifted to this temple for Chitramezhi Thirumandapam maintenance and worship. ( ARE 205 of 1922.

Kulothunga hozha-III's  3rd reign year inscription starts with his meikeerthi as "Maduraiyum Eezhamum konda... ". The inscriptions records that a individual person  has established an endowment of burning a perpetual lamp with ghee for which 2 cows and calf was gifted to  this god Aludayar Thirubhutheeswaramudayar ( ARE 206 of 1922 ).

Vijayanagara King Devaraya Maharayar Sakam 1352 ( 1430 CE ) inscription records that Thari irai ( தறி இறை ), was collected in terms of cash from the weavers  and given to the Thirubhutheeswaramudayar as per the order of the King. The inscription mentions the persons name Sirigirinatha Udayar and Village name as Vacharasoor.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted in the year 1992 and 2009.   

LEGEND
It is believed that this temple was constructed and worshiped Lord Shiva by Bhuta ganas ( During the process of Dancing Lord Shiva’s dress got disturbed. On seeing that the Bhuta Ganas laughed at Lord Shiva. So Lord Shiva as Rudra ordered / Cursed to leave Kailash. To get rid of the curse The Bhuta Ganas came to this place took bath in Adhiseshan tank and worshiped Lord Shiva )  and   Rishis / Munis . This sthala purana is in the form of bas relief on the pillars and ceiling. Dakshinamurthy was also worshiped by two Rishis.

Ambal temple is on the left side of the moolavar and facing same direction, hence it is considered as Arthanareeswarar form. It is believed that, separated couples will reunite, relieved from the difference of opinions, if  worshiped on Somavaram & Pradosham days, after doing abhishekam and offering vastaram to Lord Shiva and Ambal. Devotees prays Ambal for the Child boon and to get relieved from marriage obstacles.

This temple is also believed to the parihara sthalam for the Rahu and Ketu doshams.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas  are conducted on Maha Shivaratri days, Pradosham with Lord Shiva and Ambal procession ( 3 times ) in the prakara, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Deepavali, Karthigai Deepam, Navaratri in the month Purattasi  ( October – November ), Thai Poosam, Fridays in the month Thai ( January ), 10 days Panguni Uthiram a Brahmotsavam ( March – April ), Aadi Pooram, Valaikappu Vizha to Ambal, Special abhishekams on Thursdays for Medha / Gnana Dakshinamurthy, Arudra Darshan in the month Aippasi, Pavithrotsavam, Masi Magam and Tamil New year day.

The temple will be kept opened between 06.30 hrs to 11.30 hrs to 11.30 hrs and 16.30 hrs to 20.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
Sriperumbudur is on the Chennai to Bangalore national High way / Mumbai Highway and the temple is about 200 meters off highway.
The temple is about 500 meters from Adikesava Perumal / Ramanujar Temple,  19 KM from Thiruvallur, 34 KM from Kanchipuram, 44 KM from Arakkonam Junction and 55 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Thiruvallur.
