The
Visit to this Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Temple at Akkur was a part of visit to
the Temples and heritage sites around Kanchipuram, scheduled on 10th
July 2021.
Moolavar : Sri Lakshmi Narayanar
Thayar : Sri Mahalakshmi
Urchavar : Sri Srinivasan & Ambujavalli.
Some
of the Salient features of this temple are….
The
temple is facing east with Rajagopuram. Balipeedam Deepasthambham and Garudan
are in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar Narayana and Mahalakshmi are in
sitting posture. Mahalakshmi is sitting on the left laps of Narayanar. There is
no images in the Koshtam. In artha mandapam Ambujavalli Thayar, Andal, Lakshmi
Hayagreevar, Lakshmi Narasimhar, Urchavar Krishna as Kalinga Narthana is with Chatur bhujam is a special attraction in this temple.
In
Mukha mandapam Vishwaksena, Bhasyakarar, Desikan, Akkur Andavar, Garuda and Anjaneya.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and mukha
mandapam. The adhisthana is of simple
Padabandha adhisthana with three patta kumuda. From adhisthana to prastaram constructed
with Bricks. A Vesara style Vimana is above the Bhoomi desam. One of the old Shobana / steps side stone was
erected after the Balipeedam and Garudan.
Floor was raised up to Kumudam level during recent years.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
It
is said about seven centuries ago, the Lord maha Vishnu appeared and revealed
His existence near Tumburu Theertham at Tirumala Hills, to a great scion
called Doddacharya.
Doddacharya fetched the idols Lakshmi Narayana, Goddess Ambujavalli, Goda (...?) and Vishwaksena
which were found hidden under the earth, installed them at Akkur Village and
built a temple with bricks. Latter Sri Ramanuja and Sri Nigamantha Mahadesikan and Saint
Srimad Akkur Andavan were also installed.
11th
to 12th Century CE Chozha ( Rajendra Chozha ) period inscriptions
are found on the adhisthana. According
to the archaeologists Akkur Village originally comprised six hamlets – Samburanatham,
Singili Pattarai, Thatha Pattarai, Dhaneswaran Modu, Purangavasam and
Srinivasapuram. Latter it was named as Akkur.
Urchavars are made during 1970 by the present Trustee's father The
temple was renovated and completely painted at a cost of 7 Lakhs. The outer
floor level was raised up to Kumuda. Maha samprokshanam was carried out in 2003 and 2015 ( at a cost of Rs 6
Lakhs ).
LEGENDS
Since
Mahalakshmi is with Narayanar in this sanctum, devotees parys to re-unite the
separated couples, to get rid of the marriage obstacles, to get Peace,
prosperity and harmony in the family life.
This is a Navagraha and Rahu & Ketu Parihara sthalam. Special poojas are conducted on Rahu and Ketu peyarchi days. It
is believed that this temple is equivalent to Tirupati Tirumala and devotees
who couldn’t go to Tirupati can offer in this temple.

CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Ram Navami, Vaikunta
Ekadasi, Navaratri, Sri Jayanthi, Hanumath Jayanthi, vaikunta Ekadasi Garuda
seva, Puratasi Third Saturday, Panguni Uthiram and Tamil New Years day, Rahu & Ketu peyarchi days, etc.
