The
PreHistoric periods are classified as Palaeolithic ( 10 Lakhs years ), Microlithic
( 10000 Years ), Neolithic ( 5000 – 3000 Years ), Chalcolithic ( 3000 – 2000
Years BCE, not confirmed ) and Megalithic
2500 Years and Pre Megalithic ( 1000 – 300 CE ). To understand the prehistory
of Tamil Nadu as a whole and the Palaeolithic age of this region in particular,
the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology established a small site museum at
Poondi in 1985, for the benefit of the public, students and scholars. The pre
historic site museum at Poondi is unique as it features the prehistoric heritage of this area. It is the only site
Museum in India, which portrays regional prehistory.
The
Tools and artefacts on the display includes Handaxes, cleavers, scrappers,
discoids, Borers and core materials found in and around Poondi. These artefacts
are made of quartzite rock pebbles encountered
in the form of Conglomerate. Apart from Palaeolithic Tools, Microlithic,
implements, Neolithic Celts, Megalithic Potteries, sarcophagi, three legged
urn, Iron implements and fossil remains of wood, Snail and leaf are the other
important display of this museum. The
tools fall in a class of artefacts called Acheulian that Scientists believes
that these were invented by the by the Homo Erectus - ancestors of modern Human - in Africa about 1.6 Million years ago.
Archaeologists have discovered India’s Pre-Historic age stone tools, up to 1.5
Million years old, in these sites in South India. This discovery may change
existing ideas about the earliest arrival of human ancestors from Africa to
India.
Life

dinosaur and rock portion with prehistoric paintings were erected in the open
space in front of the museum established in the year 1993.
