25th March 2018
In search of Mambalam Ellai Amman and Village Guarding deities continued on 25th March 2018, since no program was planned on Sunday. It was pending for a long period to get clarifications from the Poojari of NavaSakthi Pidari Sri Kaliamman temple of Ashok Nagar, one of the Ellai Amman of Mambalam. I was lucky this time. He guided me to go to this Sri Nagathamman Temple on the border of Ashok Nagar and KK Nagar.
Presiding Deity : Sri Nagathamman.
Some of the important features of this temple are….
This temple is facing east with an entrance arch. The stucco images of dwarabalakis are on the both sides of the entrance. Soolam, Palipedam and Simha Vahana are immediately after the entrance arch in the front mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum consists of Sanctum, arthamandapam and a Muka mandapam. In muka mandapam sudhai sirpams of various incarnations of Ambal. Nagars are under a peepal tree and Navagrahas are in the mandapam. The sanctum vimana is of 2 tiers and Durgai is in koshtam.
It was told that the presiding deity Amman ( Amman’s head under the Amman kept in sitting posture ) and the Amman under peepal tree are found while ploughing in the same place, which was once an agricultural land. Poojari told that he do not know, from when the original temple exists, but may be 400 to 500 years old. The present temple was constructed about 50 years before and kumbhabhishekam was conducted in the year1993. He also told this is also an ellai Amman Temple of Ashok Nagar ( originally it was a part of Mambalam area ) and KK Nagar.
