Karumanika Perumal Koil / கருமாணிக்க பெருமாள் கோயில், சத்தரை / Satharai, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Karumanika Perumal Temple at Agaram was a part of the “Ashta Siddhi Temples” visit, located between Kosasthalaiyar and Koovam rivers, on the north side of Perambakkam. Apart from Shiva temples, on the way visited Perumal and Murugan temples also.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with a 3-tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Garudan, and Dwajasthambam are after the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas both in stucco and stone are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar Karumanicka  Perumal is with Sri Kanaka Valli and Kamala Valli. In praharam Chakkarathalwar & Yoga Narasimhar and Anjaneyar.

ARCHITECTURE
Stucco images of Ramar, Sita, Lakshma, Anjaneyar, Maha Vishnu with Maha Lakshmi and two disciples are on the Rajagopuram. Vimanam is little unusual style, a salakara Vimanam/ vesara with 3 Kalasas. In the Greevam  Maha Vishnu is in standing posture.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the original temple was built during the Pallava period and later received contributions from Chozhas and Pandyas. The temple was completely reconstructed in recent years.

King Jadavarma Sundara  Pandyan’s 26th reign year ( 1277 CE ) inscription ( in the ardha mandapam wall ) records the gift for conducting  Panguni utsavam at Koovam / Cooum Thiruvirkolam temple and this temple. The inscription further mentions Cooum as Thiyaga Samudra Nallur.

The Compound wall and Gopura Entrance doors are donated by Venkatachalayyangar’s son Raghavayyangar’s wife Nachhiyarammal, in the year 1980 - 81.

Jeernodhara Maha Samprokshanam was conducted on 12th June 1997.
With the blessings of Paramahamsethyathi Srirangam Srimath Andavan Sriranga Ramanuja Mahadesikan, Jeernortharana Maha Samprokshanam was conducted on 18th April 2014.

Rajagopuram and Jeernortharana maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 13th June 2022.



LEGENDS
As per the legend, this place once with mango trees, grown like Sathram – Umbrella, hence this was called Satharai. While writing Bothayana Soothra, requested Perumal, and the Koovam came near this place.

In another legend, for the request of water for Perumal’s abhishekam,  Perumal created the river Koobam ( well in Sanskrit ), which has been corrupted to the present name of Koovam.

When this place was under severe drought, after praying to Perumal, 15 days of continuous rain occurred after 150 years.  

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala pooja, special poojas are conducted, 6 Utsavams, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Chitra Pournami, Andal Thirukalyanam, Bogi, Swati Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar Jayanthi,  and all Vaishnava functions.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
Since oru kala pooja is conducted the exact time of opening and closing are unpredictable. As per the schedule temple will be kept open between 08.00 hrs to 10.30 hrs and 16.30 hrs to 18.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
Satharai is on the main road connecting Tiruvallur to Tiruttani and Poonamallee to Arakkonam highways. The temple is about 6.00 KM from Kadambathur, 4.0 KM from Perambakkam, 14 KM from Tiruvallur, 28.3 KM from Arakkonam, and 51 KM from Chennai Central.
Nearest Railway station is Kadambathur.
