The
Visit to this Shri Adinath Digambar Jain Temple at Korakkottai was a part of
Uzhavarapani at Kovilampoondi Jain
Temple organised by the Tamil Jains, Ahimsa walk Group
on 2nd July 2021. It was told that Korakkottai signifies a big Fort.
The
main Deity : Sri Adinatha Tirthankara.
Some
of the salient features of this Jinalaya are...
Jinalaya
is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Manasthamabam are after
the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas in flat stone are in front of Mukha
mandapam. In Sanctum Sanctorum Shri
Adinatha Tirthankara is in sitting posture. Adinatha is with elongated
earlobes. A Mahara thorana is shown on the back side of his head. Two whisk
bearers are on both sides. Creepers are shown as floral designs. A Thindu is
also shown on the back side of the
Tirthankara.
Metal
images are in the Maha mandapam. The Parivara sannidhis for Chakreshwari, Padmavathi Amman and Dharma
Devi are on the north side of the praharam. An un-finished idl is also found in the praharam.
About
500 meters from the Village, a rock surface is called "Samiyar Parai". Some Munis’ padas / foot
prints are found. It is believed that rain will come, if pooja is done for rain.
ARCHITECTURE
The
Jinalaya consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and Mukha mandapam. A
Dravida Two tier Vimanam is on the top of sanctum sanctorum. Tirthankaras are
in the Tala and Greeva koshtas. The Total temple was reconstructed with Bricks
and cement concrete.
The Rajagopuram is of 5 tiers with stucco images of 24 Tirthankaras was constructed under the Guidance of Muni Sri 1008 Viswesh Sagar. These 24 Tirthankaras are visible from far distance.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is believed that the temple was constructed during 18th Century. The antiquity of the moolavar idol is not known. The Sub-Sannidhis
are constructed latter period. The
Rajagopuram was constructed in 2013. The required fund for constructing the rajagopuram was received from Tamil jains community, of which a considerable part was contributed by Mr Sugumaran Dhananjayan.
It
was told that, a villager dreamt that a Parshwanath Tirthankar idol was
lying in the pond. The Villagers searched and found the Parshvanath Tirthankara from the pond. That idol is now kept as the Utsava Murti of the temple.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Mahaveer Jayanti,
Mukkudai, Ashtanik, Avani Avittam, Atchaya Tritiya, Karthigai Deepam, Kaanum
Pongal Utsav, Aadi Velli Utsav, Navaratri.
