Sri Sakkarai Amma Temple / ஸ்ரீ சக்கரை அம்மா சமாதி கோயில்… A Siddhar Samadhi Temple, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Thiruvanmiyur is also a siddhar Bhoomi, like Thiruvotriyur, where Pamban Swamigal Jeeva samadhi, his disciple Sri Subramaniya Dasar, Siddhar Sri-la-Sri Balaramalinga Nathar, Sri Valmiki Munivar Temple, and Sri Sakkarai Amma Jeeva Samadhi Temple are located around Sri Marundeeswarar Temple.  Sri Sakkarai Amma Samadhi Temple is located near Kalakshetra Foundation. Anandamba, who does meditation with chakra and Shiva Linga was called as Sakkara Amma, which has got corrupted to Sakkarai Amma.

The Samadhi temple is facing east with Vinayagar and Murugan on both sides. Sakkarai Amma’s image is in the sanctum along with Srichakra and Bana Lingam ( Believed to be worshipped by Sakkarai Amma. In Koshtam Ramana Maharishi, Kanchi Maha Periyava, Raghavendra Swamigal, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Pamban Swamigal. Another Image of the Sakkarai Amma is in the discourse hall. A Brief biography of Sri Sakkarai Amma…

Sakkarai Amma as Anandamba was born at Devikapuram in Tiruvannamalai District to Sesha Gurukkal in 1854 CE. During her young age, She used to sit in-front of Priyanayaki Amman’s sanctum sanctorum, staring at Amman and reciting slokas. She was married as a second wife to Sambasiva Sivachariyar of Chennai Komaleeswaranpet at the age of 9, who is 15 years elder than her. She used to meditate at the open terrace after the work in Mutt. Her husband passed away due to decease, when she was 20. Then she moved to her brother Arunachalam’s house at Polur.

During her stay at Polur, she had the chance of getting blessings of  Nakshatra Gunambal, an yogini & Siddhar, of Nakshatra Hill,  Polur Vittoba Swamiji and Okiya siddhar, on the way to Thiruvannamalai and Adimudi siddhar. Adimudi Siddhar taught her, the ways to attain mukthi. Nakshatra Gunambal taught Anandamba, the Sri Chakra worship and Ashta Siddhis. In that She mastered the lakima, flying like a bird in the sky ( lakima - one of the ashta siddhis ).

She was forced to come back to Komaleeswaranpet along with his brother, for medical treatment to her brother Arunachalam. She continued her meditation and Sri chakra worship. After continuous meditation, she has got in to the bright light of spiritual power. She was then called as sakkarai Amma.  Most of the time, she used to laugh and behave like lunatic.

Dr Nanjunda Rao, who was attending Sakkarai Amma’s brother Arunachalam, came to know the spiritual power of  Sakkarai amma. He became her disciple and followed her spiritual path. Dr Nanjunda Rao took her to many temples, which includes Kashi, Thiruvannamalai etc. As per A Devaraja Mudaliar’s book of “Anu thinamum Ramanarudan”, Sakkarai Amma meet Ramana maharishi in the virupaksha Cave along with Dr Nanjunda Rao.

In 1901, on the way to Komaleeswaranpet, after worshipping Sri Marundeeswarar, at Thiruvanmiyur, Sakkarai Amma, indicated where her Samadhi to be established and further told that She will become popular after 100 years. Dr Nanjunda Rao purchased the land. After 10 days on 28^th February 1901, around 15.30 Hrs Sakkarai Amma attained Samadhi at Komaleeswaranpet. Her body was brought to this place and laid in this Jeeva Samadhi Temple. As per Sakkarai Amma’s words, the jeeva Samadhi was reconstructed in 2001, ie 100 years after She attained Samadhi and consecrated on 1^st February 2002, by Dr Nanjunda Rao’s  family member.

It was told that Kanchi Maha Periyava also did meditation, 5 days at this Jeeva Samadhi during January month 1948.

Thiru Vi Kalyanasundaram had written about Sri Sakkarai Amma and her Siddhu in his book “Ulloli-உள்ளொளி (The Inner Light )”

// சென்னைக் கோமளீசுவரன் பேட்டையில் ஓர் அம்மையார் இருந்தனர். அவர் காலஞ்சென்ற டாக்டர் நஞ்சுண்டராவின் குரு என்று உலகஞ் சொல்லும். அவ்வம்மையார் பறவையைப்போல வானத்தில் பறப்பர். ஒருமுறை யான் வாசித்த கல்லூரியின் மேல் மாடியில் பறந்துவந்து நின்றனர்.

மானுடம் பறக்கிறதெனில் உலகம் அதை எப்படி வியக்குமென்று சொல்ல வேண்டுவதில்லை. அக்காலத்தில் சென்னையில் வதிந்த விஞ்ஞானியர் பலர் சூழ்ந்து சூழ்ந்து அம்மையார் நிலையை ஆராய்வர். அப்பொழுது சென்னை மியூஸியத் தலைவராயிருந்த ஓர் ஐரோப்பியரால் பறவையார் நிலை பெரிதும் ஆராயப்பட்டது. அம்மையார் பறவை இனத்தில் சேர்ந்தவரென்றும், அவரிடம் பறவைக்குரிய கருவிகரண அமைப்புக்கள் சில உள்ளன என்றும், கூர்தல் (Evolution) அறப்படி அத்தகைப் பிறவி இயற்கையில் அமைதல் கூடும் என்றும் அவரால் விளக்கப்பட்டன. அவர் விளக்கம் மற்றவரால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படவில்லை. யான் 'தேசபக்தன்' ஆசிரியனாகியபோது டாக்டர் நஞ்சுண்டராவிடம் நெருங்கிப் பழகுதல் நேர்ந்தது. பறவையாரைப் பற்றி அவரை நான் விசாரித்தேன். அவர், 'அம்மையார் சித்தரினத்தில் சேர்ந்தவர்' என்று கூறினர். பறவை நாயகியார் நிலை மனோதத்துவத்துக்கு எட்டுவதா? உன்னிப் பாருங்கள்.//
