Sri Muthupureswarar Temple / Sri Muthapureeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ முத்தபுரீஸ்வரர் கோயில், Athur, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Muthapureeswarar Temple at Athur, near Chengalpattu was a part of the “Shiva and Vishnu Temples Visit” on 16th January 2024. 


This is one of the seven Shiva temples and the 5th Shiva temple in and around Athur Village in Chengalpattu District.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with a damaged original Rishabam in front of mukha mandapam. Stucco Dwarapalakas are on the mandapa pillars. Murugan and Vinayagar are on both sides of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is a little big on a round avudayar. In Koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.

Chandikeswarar and Ambal are in the in the praharam. A New rishabam and Simha Vahanam are in the open mukha mandapam.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing South. Stucco Dwarapalakis are on both sides of the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.



ARCHITECTURE
The original temple was rebuilt in Gramiya style without following any temple architecture. The sanctum sanctorum was built with stone up to prastaram and an eka tala brick dravida Vimanam is above the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the greeva koshtam. The Mukha mandapam with Stucco Dwarapalakas and Yazhi pillars are built with cement concrete.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the temple was built during the  Parantaka Chozha period. The dilapidated temple was reconstructed in recent years with brick and cement.

The inscription tablet installed in front of the temple records that the Parantaka Chozha-1 ( 927 CE ), the nearby lake called Veeranarayana Putheri was excavated and maintained 

The temple was reconstructed and Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 23rd November 2017.

LEGENDS
As per Deva Prasannam, Shiva and Ambal were worshipped by Alakapuri King’s sons, Kubera’s sons Nalakoobaran, and Manickdeepan worshipped Shiva of this temple. 

The Ashta nagas worshipped Shiva of this temple and attained the Status of Nagarajas.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosam, Maha Shivaratri days, Vinayagar Chaturthi, etc,.

The temple will be kept open between 08.00 hrs to 09.00 hrs and 17.00. hrs to 19.00 hrs.

This Village Athur is on the Chengalpattu to Kanchipuram.  The Athur is about 7 KM from Chengalpattu, 35 KM from Kanchipuram, 40 KM from Tambaram, and 64 KM from Chennai.
The Nearest Railway station is Reddipalayam / Palur and the Junction is Chengalpattu.
