A BRIEF LIFE HISTORY OF TYAGARAJA
Tyagaraja was born as Kakarla Tyagabrahmam in Tiruvarur town, to Kakarla Ramabrahmam and Sitamma on 04th May 1767 CE. During his childhood, he had training in singing from his grandfather Veena Kalahastayya, and his mother. Tyagaraja learned music from Guru Ramakrishnananda, an eminent scholar during that time. After learning to sing devotional songs, started composing the songs in his teenage years. He spent most of his time worshipping Rama's idol by composing Kirthis and singing. The Idol of Rama was given to him by his mother.

A disciple of Vankatramana Bhagavathar with Tyagaraja

He left home and renounced this materialistic life. He undertook many pilgrimages and his disciples also followed him. It is believed that he had composed nearly 24000 songs of which only 700 are survived, which are written by his disciples in palm leaves. Most of his songs are composed in Telugu on Rama and rarely on Shiva also ( Kovur near Chennai Shiva temple has his Pancharathna Kithanas ).

As far as his personal life is concerned, Tyagaraja married Parvatamma at the age of 18, in 1784 CE, but she died in 1789 CE. Later, in 1791, he married her sister, Kamalamba. They were blessed with a daughter called Sitalakshmi, who got married in 1810 to Kuppusamy Shastri of Ammal Agraharam. Tyagaraja left this materialistic world and attained siddhi on 06th January 1847 CE. The details of the final days of his life are not known.

His Samadhi was identified 78 years after his death and the present Samadhi Temple, Praharam and Madapalli was constructed and consecrated on 07th January 1925, by his disciple Vidhya Sundari Bengaluru Nagarathnammal, daughter of Mysore Buttalakshmi Ammal. The total work was completed in 1938.
