Soolamangai Temple / Soolamangalam Siva Temple / Sri Kirthivaheeswarar Temple / சூலமங்கலம் சிவாலயம், Soolamangalam, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Soolamangai, Sri Kirthivaheeswarar Temple was a part of the Saptamangai Sthalams Visit around Chakkarapalli, near Kumbakonam, organized by கும்பகோணம் வட்டார வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம், ( Thanks to Gopinath, The founder ) on 10th March 2024.



This is the 3rdtemple of the Sapthamangai Sthalams, where Kaumari one of the Saptamatrikas, the female power deity of Muruga worshipped Shiva of this temple. Ma Parvati also worshipped Shiva of this temple and had the Trishul darshan. As a significance of this legend, there is an Asthra Thevar/Sooladevar idol in front of the ardha mandapam.  This is also one of the Thevara Vaippu Sthalam, sung by Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal, in Kshethrakovai ( 6-70 )

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with a 3-tier Rajagopuram and a mandapam. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in the Vavval nethi mandapam. Soola Devar or Astara Devar is with folded hands on the left side of the entrance to the ardha mandapam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of antarala. Moolavar is small on a round avudayar. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, and Durgai.


Ambal Sri Alangaravalli is in a separate sannidhi in the ardha mandapam facing east. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Gajalakshmi, Chandikeswarar and Navagrahas.




ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, vrutha kumudam, and pattika. The deva koshtams are padra koshtams with Padma jagathy and vrudha kumudam. The bhitti starts with vedika. The pilasters are with square bases and Vishnu kandha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, palakai, and poo mottu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with nasi kudus, and bhuta ganas are in the valapi. The superstructure above Bhumi Desam was built with bricks with 2nd tala, greevam, and vesara sigaram. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the tala and greeva koshtams.





HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Original temple may belong to the Chozha period and the same was reconstructed during Vijayanagara /Thanjavur Nayakas and Marathas.


LEGENDS
As per the Legend, Saptamatrikas worshipped Shiva of these Sthalas and had different dharsans. After hearing this, ma Parvati also worshipped Shiva and had the darshan of Shiva’s nethra darshan at Chakkarapalli ( Sri Chakravaheswarar ), Ganga darshan at Ariyamangai ( Sri Harimuktheeswarar ), Trishul darshan ( Ashthra Devar ) at Soolamangai ( Sri Kirthivaheshwarar ), Pada / kazhal darshan at Nandhimangai ( Sri Jambunathar ), Damaru darshan at Pasumangai ( Sri Pasupatheeswarar ), Naga darshan at Thazhamangai ( Sri Chandramouleeswarar ) and swallowing alakala poison darshan at Pullamangai ( Sri Brahmapureeswarar ). Hence these 7 temples are called Spatha Mangai sthalams.

Soola thevar worshipped Shiva of this temple to get back the original form.  Shiva also gave darshan Devas as Gajasamharamurthy to this temple.


POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Amavasya days, pradosam, maha Shivaratri, etc.

The 10-day Saptasthana pallakku / palanquin celebration will start on Panguni month Karthigai nakshatra day with flag hoisting. Each temple Utsava Murtis will visit all the Saptamangai Temples. Thirugnanasambandar’s hymns praise this event as…

HOW TO REACH
To reach Soolamangalam, on Kumbakonam to Thanjavur Road, after Ayyampettai, turn left on Soolamangalam Road.
This Soolamangai Temple is about 1.4 KM from Pasupathikoil, 2.3 KM from Ayyampettai, 18 KM from Thanjavur, and 27 KM from Kumbakonam.
The local train will stop at Pasupathikoil. The nearest big railway station is Thanjavur.
