Sri Jambulingeshwarar Temple / Sri Jambulingeswarar Temple / Jambukeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ ஜம்புலிங்கேஸ்வரர் கோயில், Sembakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

While searching for ancient temples in Chennai area, which are renovated during recent years, found that the temples retains some of its antiquity of the old temple’s components or sculptures etc. In the process I came across this Sri Jambulingeswarar Temple, at Sembakkam during my visit on 24th April 2024. This temple has some antiques evidences with some unique features.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..
The temple is facing east with an entrance from North and west. The North side Rajagopuram is of 5 tiers. The temple tank is just opposite to the temple. Balipeedam and rishhabam are in front of the sanctum Sanctorum. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Utsavars are in the antarala. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In paraharam Maha Ganapathy, Chandikeswarar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar ( stucco image of idumban is on the pillar), Navagrahas, Bairavar, Surian, and Ayyappan ( facing West ). There is a Paramapata vassal too similar to maha Vishnu temples ( near Maha Vishnu koshtam ).

Amman Sri Akilandeswari is in a separate sannidhi facing South. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
The Total temple was reconstructed with Bricks and cement concrete. Stucco image of Shiva, Parvati, Shiva’s family are on the top of the mandapam.

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and open mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a upanam, pada bandha adhistanam, consists of jagathy, 3 patta kumudam. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam. The Vimanam over the sanctum sanctorum is with greevam and nagara sigaram. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and brahma are in the Tala and greeva koshtams.





HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It was told that the temple exists since 10th to 11th Century. But no inscriptions found in this temple to prove the same. Moolavar, Rishabam, Pranala / komukha and Chandikeswarar are very old and may belongs to 12th to 13th Century.




LEGENDS
This legend is associated with Thiruvanaikoil and Shiva’s name is also Jumbukeswarar. Jambu means நாவல் / jamun / Jambul / jamoon plum / Eugenia Arnottiana. The legend of Thiruvanaikoil goes like this… According to the legend, this place was once a forest with jambu trees. Nearby was a tank called Chandra theertha which was filled by water from the river Kaveri. Lord Shiva appeared as a Linga under one of the sthala Viruksha Jambu tree / White Naval maram, Hence Lord Shiva is praised as Jambulingeswarar.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Maha Shivaratri days, Fridays, Amavasya days, Vaikunta Ekadasi.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs. to 11.00 hrs. and 17.30 hrs. and 20.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is about 1 KM from Sembakkam Bus Stop on Medavakkam to Tambaram Main Road ( City buses 31G, 51, 51A and 51 Ax will stop ).
The temple is about 4.2 KM from Medavakkam Koot road, 5.8 KM from Tamparam East railway station, and 30 KM from Chennai Central.
The nearest Railway station is Tambaram.
