LEGENDS
As per the legend the Rishis of Tharukavanam feel proud of their power and donot require any God’s assistance any more. To teach a lession, Shiva took the form of Pichadana and went to take picksha through the street. On seeing Shiva’s beauty, the Rishipathinis followed him, even when the their dress slipping down without knowing anything. On hearing this the Rishis sent snake, tiger etc on shiva, which came from the Velvi kund. Finally they sent an elephant. Shiva in the form of small size went inside the Elephant, and came out after tearing the Elephant’s skin. Hence Lord Shiva is Gaja samhara moorthy. Lord Shiva gave gnanam to the rishis by killing elephant called as Gnanasabeswarar. This legend is also applicable to Thiruparaithurai Shiva temple.
