The
Sri Palasavaneswarar Temple at Nalur is near the Nalur Mayanam, one of the Paadal
Perta Shiva temples, and this temple at Nalur is also considered a Thevara
vaippu sthalam.
Thirugnanasambandar came to this place after worshipping
Thirucherai. He has sung these hymns combining Nalur and Nalur Mayanam ( 213th
Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam and 96th Sthalam of Chozha Nadu,
Cauvery / Kaveri Thenkarai ).

The Hymn goes like this …
பாலூரு மலைப்பாம்பும் பனிமதியும் மத்தமும்
மேலூரும் செஞ்சடையான் வெண்ணூல்சேர் மார்பினான்
நாலூர் மயானத்து நம்பான்றன் அடிநினைந்து
மாலூரும் சிந்தையர்பால் வந்தூரா மறுபிறப்பே.

இறைவன் தன் பக்கத்தில் ஊர்ந்து செல்லும் மலைக்கும் தன்மை கொண்ட அரவினையும், தண்மதியையும், ஊமத்த மலரையும் செஞ்சடையில் கொண்டவன்; முப்புரி நூலினன்; நாலூர் மயானத்தில் விளங்குபவன்; அப்பிரான் திருக்கழலை எண்ணியும் அன்பாக வாழ்வார்க்கும் மறுபிறவி இல்லை.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple is facing east with a temple tank. The entrance to the sanctum sanctorum is from the south side. Balipeedam and
Rishabam are in front of the Temple immediately after the entrance. Dwarapalakas, Vinayagar and Murugar are on
both sides of the sanctum Sanctorum. Moolavar is on a Square avudayar. There is
no murtis in Deva koshtam.

ARCHITECTURE
The
whole temple was built with bricks. The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum,
antarala, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam.
The sanctum sanctorum is of Gajaprishta / Gajabrushta Style Vimanam. The vimanam is of
Eka tala. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the Greeva
koshtam. The front mandapa is of
Vavval nethi style built during Thanjavur Marathas.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since this temple is considered one of the
Thevara vaippu Sthalam, sung by Thirugnanasambandar, this temple may have existed
since the 7th to 8th century. It is further
believed that the temple was constructed during Ko Chengat Chozha as a Mada Temple and received
contributions from Pallavas, Chozhas, and Marathas. Inscriptions are found on the surfaces
of the antarala entrance Side Columns. The inscriptions reads as… Madurai
konda koparakesari… belongs to Parantaka Chozha.
The temple authorities claim that this is also another Paadal Petra Sthalam since Thirugnanasambandar's hymns mention both Nalur and Nalur mayanam.
LEGENDS
Shiva
of this temple was worshipped by Devars and saints especially, Abathsthamba
Munivar.

Apart
from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on pradosham and Maha
shivaratri.

19.00 hrs

The
temple is about 30 meters from Kumbakonam to Thiruvarur road at Nalur.
All
the buses from Kumbakonam to Kudavasal, Thiruvarur will stop at Nalur.
The
temple is about 2 KM from Nalur Mayanam ( the Paadal Petra sthalam ), 3 KM from
Kudavasal, 9.00 KM from Valangaiman, 15 KM from Kumbakonam, 25 KM from Thiruvarur, 50 KM from Thanjavur (
District head Quarters ) and 300 KM from Chennai.
Nearest
Railway station is Kumbakonam.
