Koneri Pallam Rock Cut Caves, An UNESCO Heritage Site, Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Koneri Pallam Rock Cut Cave Mandapam at Mamallapuram, was a Part of “Mamallapuram Heritage Visit” under the title – “Known Mamallapuram, Unknown places - தெரிந்த மாமல்லபுரம், தெரியாத இடங்கள்” organised by SASTRA & Chithiram Pesuthada Groups on 19^th March 2023. This is one of the group of monuments of Mamallapuram a UNESCO Heritage site of Tamil Nadu.

Koneri mandapam... Since this mandapam is excavated in front of Koneri Tank an eri, this Mandapa might have obtained its name as Koneri Pallam mandapam. The front face of the cave is with valapi, kapotam with nasikudus, vyyalavari and Hara elements.

This is the only mandapa amongst all Mamallapuram Rock Cut Caves with 5 sanctum sanctorum, for which deities are not known. These 5 Sanctum Sanctorums are excavated in a row with two Dwarapalakas at the entrance of each Sanctums. These Dwarapalas are not uniform. They wears Makutas and holding different weapons with minor changes in style of standing, head gear etc,. The extreme left Cave Dwarapalakas are in damaged condition / chipped off.

The Cave was excavated with Sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The Mukha Mandapa front side Pillars ( 4 square 7 octaganal pillars and 2 pilasters ) are with simple square pillars with unfinished tharanga pothyal. The Pillars ( 4 pillars and 2 pilasters ) which separates Ardha mandapam and Mukha mandapam are Vrutha pillars with ornamental works. The Pillars are with kalasam, Amalaka type of kudas and Tharanga pothyals.

Water leak is observed from the top of the cave, through the cracks. This may be one of the reason, why this is left incomplete.

கோனேரி பள்ளம் மண்டபம்

கோனேரி டேங் ( Koneri Tank ) என்று இன்று அறியப்படுகின்ற ஒரு ஏரியின் முன்பாக உள்ளதால், இக்குகுடைவரைக் கோயில் / மண்டபம் இப்பெயரைச் சமீப காலத்தில் பெற்றிருக்கலாம். அதைத் தவிர, மாமல்லபுரத்தின் ஒரே ஐந்து கருவறைகளைக் கொண்ட குடைவரைக் கோயிலாக இருப்பது இதன் மற்றொரு சிறப்பு. இதன் கருவறைகள் எந்தெந்த தெய்வ உருவங்களுக்காக குடையப்பட்டு இருந்திருக்கலாம் என்பது ஓர் ஊகமே.

முக மண்டபத்தையும் அர்த்த மண்டபத்தையும் இரு விதமான தூண்கள் வேறுபடுத்திக் காட்டுகின்றது. முக மண்டப தூண்கள் குறுக்குவெட்டில் சதுர வடிவமானவை. ஆனால் அர்த மண்டபத்தைப் பிரிக்கும் தூண்கள் அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட உருளை வடிவத் தூண்களாக உள்ளன. ஒரே குடைவரைக் கோயிலில் இரு வேறுமாதிரியான தூண்கள் இருப்பதால் தூண்களை வைத்து காலக் கணக்கீடு செய்வது சாத்தியமில்லை.

ஐந்து கருவறைகளும் தனித் தனியாக இரண்டிரண்டு துவாரபாலகர்களால் காக்கப்படுகின்றன. இங்கேயும் துவாரபாலகர் உருவங்கள் பொது அமைப்பில் ஒரே வகையாக இருப்பினும், நுண்மையான விவரங்களில் வேறுபட்டுள்ளன. அவை சடைமகுடம் தரித்து, இரண்டு கொம்புகளுடன், தடிமனான கழிகளுடன் சிவ நியதிகளுடன் உள்ளன. இடது பக்கம் கோடியில் இருக்கும் குடைவரையின் துவாரபாலகர்களில், ஒரு துவாரபாலகர் உருவம் முற்றிலுமாகவும் மற்றொன்று பகுதியாகவும் சிதைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

There is also another cave on the left side of this cave. That cave is also unfinished in all respects. This cave is excavated with a single sanctum sanctorum and ardha mandapam / mukha mandapam. The front pillars are of squatting lion pillars. The sanctum sanctorum is little protruding from the back side wall. This Cave might have been excavated after the 5 cell Rock Cut cave was excavated.

ஐந்து கருவறைக்களைக் கொண்ட மண்டபத்தின் இடதுபுறம் மேலும் ஒற்றை கருவறை கொண்ட மண்டபம் காணப்படுகின்றது. இதுவும் முடிக்கப்படாத நிலையிலேயே காணப்படுகின்றது. முன்புறம் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ள தூண்கள் குத்தவைத்துள்ள சிங்கத்தூண்களாக அமைந்துள்ளது. கருவறை பின்சுவற்றில் இருந்து சற்று பிதுக்கமாக குடையப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இக்குடைவரை மண்டபம் மேற்கண்ட ஐந்து கருவறைகளைக் கொண்ட மண்டபம் குடையப்பட்ட பின்பு குடையப்பட்டு இருக்கலாம் என்று கருதப்படுகின்றது.
