HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As
per the Kanchipuram Mavatta Varalaru book ( page 314 ) written by A Paa
Thirugnanasambanthan, this temple was constructed during Kulothunga Chozha-III.
Two inscriptions are identified. The inscriptions are also recorded in Tamil Nadu kalvettukkal -IX, Kanchipuram mavatta kalvettukkal Volume-5.
Vira
Rajendran alias Kulothunga Chozha-III’s, 35th reign year inscription ( 1213 CE ) records the gift of some lands to Pammal Azhaga Perumal Temple ( on
03.11.1210 ) as a thiruvidayattam to Pammal Azhaga Perumal Temple. The Land was in the periphery limit of
Tamburam alias Gunaseela Nallur. This place Tambaram was under Jayangonda Chozha mandalathu Puliyur Kottathu, Surathur nattu Thamburam alias Gunaseela Nallur. This order was signed by the Panchanadhivanan Nallanayan Neelagangaraiyan. The place Thiruneermalai Emperuman Thiruvidaiyattam, Ullur thevadhanam, thiruvidaiyadttm, thurkaipatti, Pidaripatti kaval taxes are exempted and the balance land's Taxes are gifted as Thiruvidaiyattam.
Rajaraja-III’s 21st reign year ( 1227 CE ) inscription records the inscription records the endowment of burning a sandhi lamp at Pammal Emperuman Azhakaperumal by Kuththampakkam one of the manradis Bhattan alias Neelagangarayan, gave a milching Cow and nagu ( female calf ) to Pandavathootha Battan’s son Neervanna Perumal, who was well versed in Naimeechayam and also doing pooja at this temple.
The reason for inscribing the gift given to that Azhaga Perumal Temple, is inscribed here is not known. Whether
the above two inscriptions, really connected to this Shiva Temple..?. Or these
Perumal Temple's stones brought to this Shiva temple. Some one can do some research work on this.
Maha
Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 16th September, 2005 and 18th
January, 2021.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that Renganathar of Thiruneermalai worshiped Shiva of this temple.
