The
Visit to this Shri Brahma Gnanapureeswarar Temple at Keela Korukkai was a part
of the “Shiva, Vishnu and Amman Temples Visit, in and around Kumbakonam”, on 13th
July 2024.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east with Rishabas of Shiva and Ambal with balipeedam, in a common mandapam in front of the temple. Stucco image of Shiva and Parvati as
Rishabaroodar is on the top of the mukha mandapam. Vinayagar and Nagar are in
front kostam. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Two
Bairavar, Nandhiyamperuman and Suyasambigai, Suriyan, an Unknown idol ( may be Kannappar
) and Kulothunga Chozha-III are in the mandapam. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Ardhanareeswarar as Rishabandhikar, Brahma, and Durgai.
Vinayagar,
Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, and Chandikeswarar are in the praharam.
Ambal
is in a separate Sannidhi facing South with Rishabam and Balipeedam. Ambal is
in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a mukha/
maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with
jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and Pattikai. The Bhitti starts with Vedikai. The
kostas are in sala style as padra salas ( protruding outside). The pilasters
are Vishnukantha pilasters with square bases & Naga bandham, kalasam,
kudam, lotus petals mandi, palakai, and poo mottu pothyal. A beautiful Jala is
fixed on the ardha mandapam wall. Kumba panjaras are in between Koshtas. The
prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with nasikudus and Viyyalavari. The
Vimanam above the prastaram was built with bricks, one tala, greevam, and
sigaram in vesara style. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma. Maha
Vishnu and Brahma are with their consorts.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple was during the 11th to 12th century Chozha
period. Kulothunga Chozha-III period inscriptions are found on the adhistanam.
Kulothunga
period inscriptions record the endowment of burning lamps, poojas, and the
donations given to this temple.
LEGENDS
As
per the legend, the Demons Madhu and Kaidapa, stole Vedas from Brahma and
concealed them under the Sea. Maha Vishnu retrieved back the Vedas and gave
them to Brahma. But even then Brahma couldn’t carry out the creation. As
advised, Brahma came to this temple to pray to Shiva. With Shiva’s blessings,
Brahma regained back his wisdom on the Avittam Nakshatra day and started
creation. Hence Shiva is called Brahma Gnanapureeswarar.
Those
who are born on Avittam Nakshatra day will be auspicious to worship Shiva of this
temple to get rid of obstacles and succeed in their endeavours, Child boon, to
remove obstacles in marriage, Good education, etc.

Apart
from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Vinayagar Chaturthi,
Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Avitta Nakshatra days, etc.
