The visit to this Sri Thirubhuvaneswarar Temple
was unplanned. After I came to know about this Pallava period Gajaprishta
Vimana temple, in Thondai Nadu, thought of visiting, on 04th August
2024. Thanks to Semmalar Sankar for giving me the details of the Gajaprishta Vimana Temple of this place Jagirthandalam.
This prefix Jagir, to the place Thandalam might have a connection with the Sathya
Vijayanagaram, near Arani Jagir, who ruled this area and contributed to this
village. As per Urum Perum – ஊரும்
பேரும்
- thandalam means a solai / a cool place with trees, near a water Source.
Surprisingly this place is also on the banks of a tributary canal to the Palar River.
Moolavar : Sri Thirubhuvaneswarar
Consort : Sri Thiripura Sundari

ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum
sanctorum is on a Gajaprishta / Gajabrushta adhitanam with jagathy, three patta
kumudam, and pattikai. The Vimanam is of eka tala Gajaprishta style. Stucco
images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are on the tala
koshtams. During reconstruction, hope no architectural style was followed.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple belongs to the 08th to 09th Century
Pallava period and later received contributions from Chozhas, and
Vijayanagaras. The temple was reconstructed in recent years above adhistanam (
Bhitti, Prastaram, and Vimanam ) and no architectural style was followed.
Pallava,
Chozha, and Vijayanagara period inscriptions are found on the adhistanam. Since
the adhistanam was white-washed completely, ஈ couldn’t read anything.
