The visit to this Sri Kameshvarar Temple at
Pulivalam, near Sholinghur was a part of Gajaprishta Vimana Temples Visit- Part
4, on 28th May 2023.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east. Balipeedam and Rishabam
are in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of
sanctum sanctorum. In Koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma
and Durgai.
Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing South in the
ardha mandapam. Dwarapalakis are at the entrance of sanctum Sanctorum.
In Praharam, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar,
Garudan, Sri Sridevi Bhudevi Samedha Srinivasa Perumal, Durgai, Chandikeswarar,
Lakshmi Vinayagar, Nagars, Navagrahas, Suriyan and Chandran.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala
and an ardha mandapam. The Complete temple was reconstructed with bricks during
recent years. The Sanctum sanctorum is on a Gajaprishta style adhisthanam on a
upanam. The adhisthanam is of pada bandha adhisthanam. A two tala Gajaprishta
Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and
Brahma are on the tala and greeva koshtams. In Tala koshtams, Maha Vishnu and
Brahma are with their consorts.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It was told that the original temple belongs to
Pallava period and the same was reconstructed during recent years.
There is no evidence found to prove its antiquity.
LEGENDS
As per the legend, Vyagrapada wishes to plug the
flowers before, the honeybees touches the flowers, to offer to Shiva. Since the
early morning hours, it will be dark and Vyagrapada found difficult to climb
the trees. So he prayed to Shiva to give him tiger legs. Hence he was called as
Pulikal munivar. Since Vyagrapada worshiped Shiva of this place, this place was
called as Pulivalam.
As
per another legend, Kula Guru Vasihta maharishi, advised the king Dasratha to
do Puthrakameshti yaga/ Yajna for Child boon at
this place. So The King Dasaratha came to this place, established a Shiva
lingam on the banks of Kamandala river and performed the yaga / Yajna. The 4 sons Rama,
Lakshmana, Bharata and Sathrugna are born after this Puthrakameshti yaga / Yajna. Hence
Shiva of this temple is called as Kameshwarar.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are
conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar Chathurti, Annabhishekam,
Amavasya days.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to
11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

This place Pulivalam is about 7 KM from Sholinghur,
31.00 KM from Arakkonam, 104 KM from Chennai Central.
Nearest Railway Station is Arakkonam.
