Hero stone / Sati Stone /Veerakallu/ வீரக்கல் / நவகண்டம் / அரிகண்டம், Tharamangalam, Salem District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Hero and Sati Stones at Tharamangalam was a part of the Kolli Hills Heritage walk  - “வல்வில் ஒரி தேச மரபு நடை..." organized by எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடை குழு, on 20th and 21st May 2023. Thanks to Mr AT Mohan for taking me to these Hero Stones. 


From Amman Kovil Patti to Tharamangalam, on the way happened to see a Sati Stone on the side of the road culvert. The Sati stone is half buried. In this Sati stone, the hero is shown with his wife with a tuft on the right side of their head. The images are not so clear or not chiseled perfectly. This Sati stone is under worship.  This Sati stone belongs to the 16th to 17th century.


These Hero Stones are near the Tharamangalam Police Station. These are lying adjacent to a well and it was told that these are taken from the well. This group consists of Two hero stones and two Sati Stones. These  Sati and hero stones belong to the 16th to 17th centuries.

In this sati stone, the hero’s wife is shown on his right and holding a toddy pot. Both are shown with Nayakas style tuft. The hero is in anjali hastam. He is wearing a dhoti from the hip and the bottom touches his feet. A Sword is tied to a hip.


In this Sati stone, both the hero and his wife are in Anjali hastam, and  Nayaka's style tuft is shown. Both are wearing ornaments on the ears, neck, and hands. The hero is wearing a dhoti and its bottom touches his feet and his upper body is covered with a towel. He is shown with a big belly.


In this individual hero, Stone is holding a sword in the raised right hand and a round shield in the left hand, in front of his stomach. He is wearing a dhoti below his hip up to the feet. The hero seems to be bulky.


In this Individual hero Stone the hero is standing with a sword on the raised right hand. The left hand is hanging and holding something, which is not clear. He wears a dhoti up to his feet. His tuft is on the left side of his head.  A dragger is tied to his hip.

Hero Stone, Sri Kailasanathar Temple, Tharamangalam.

The Hero & Sati Stones near Sri Velayuthaswamy Temple, Tharamangalam.  
There are two hero stones installed on the left side of the Sri Velayuthaswamy Temple, believed to belong to the 16th to 17th Century. Both hero stones are Sati stones.

In the first Sati Stone, the hero is shown at the center and his wives are on both sides. The hero has a big mustache, wears ornaments in the ears, and a big tuft. He is holding a sword in the right hand and a shield in the left hand. The right-hand side wife is Anjali hastam, wearing ornaments and a big tuft. On the left, the wife is carrying a toddy pot in her left hand and a flower in her right hand. Parrots are shown above the ladies, which are considered a Mangala ( auspicious ) symbol.


The other hero stone is also a Sati stone. The hero is holding a sword in his right hand pointing down. The left hand is shown in a raised position and what he is holding is not known. The hero is wearing ornaments on the ears, on the neck, and hands. His wife is shown on his right side with his right hand in the raised position. The left hand is holding something, that is not known.
