The visit
to this Sri Agastheeswarar Temple at Siruvapuri was a part of “Gajaprishta
Vimana Temples visit – Part-2 on 07th May 2023. This
place Siruvapuri is now called Chinnambedu, on the south side of River
Arani.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east with an entrance arch / Rajagopuram base on the south
side. Stucco images of Natarajar with Sivakami, Vinayagar, and Manickavasagar
are on both sides. A Lotus pond is in
front of the temple. The stucco image of Sri Pallikondeeswarar is on the top of
Ambal sannidhi. The main sanctum sanctorum is after Ambal Sri Anandavalli’s
sannidhi. There is an entrance to the Shiva Temple on the east side also with
Balipeedam, Rishabam, and a Dwajasthambam. In the sanctum sanctorum, Vinayagar
is with Shiva. Moolavar Sri Agastheeswarar is of swayambhu on a square avudayar.
In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
Natarajar and Manickavasagar are in the ardha mandapam. Navagrahas are in the
Ambal temple ardha mandapam.
Sri
Kasi Viswanathar with Visalakshi sannidhi is in between Sri Agastheeswarar and
Ambal sannidhis. Sri Kasi Viswanathar is of Dhara Lingam with 16 flat surfaces.
All the three sannidhis are on a
straight line facing east.
In
praharam sannidhi for Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Nagar, Ayyanar
with his consorts Poorna & Puskala, Soorian, Chandikeswarar and Bairavar.

ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. The sanctum
sanctorum is of Gajaprishta style on a pada bandha adhistanam. Kumbha panjaras
are shown between koshtas. The Prastaram consists of kapotam with nasikudus and
valapi. A three-tier Gajaprishta brick vimanam with 5 kalas is on the sanctum
sanctorum. Stucco images of Shiva’s various forms are on the Vimanam. Meenakshi Sundareswarar Thirukalyana stucco
image is on the back side wall of Natarajar sannidhi.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple was built during the Pallava period and reconstructed during the Chozha period. The temple-front mandapas are constructed during the Vijayanagara
Nayakas period.
The
temple is under the administrative control of Sri Balasubramaniaswamy Temple.
LEGENDS
During
the celestial wedding of Shiva and Parvati, all the Devas, Rishis, and Munis
assembled at Mount Kailash to witness the marriage. Due to this the earth,
Southside rose and the North side went down. Shiva asked Agasthiyar to go to the South to balance it. On the way to Podhigai, Agasthiyar installed and
worshipped Shiva Lingas at many places. It is believed that the moolavar of
this temple was also installed and worshiped by Agasthyar. hence Moolavar is
called as Agastheeswarar.

from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, maha Shivaratri, etc,.

Redhills, 26 KM from Madhavaram Bus Terminus and 35 KM from Koyambedu bus
terminus and Chennai Central Station.
Nearest
