The visit
to this Sri Nootretteeswarar Temple at Chinnakavanam, Ponneri was a part of “Gajaprishta
Vimana Temples visit – Part-2 on 07th May 2023. This place
Chinnakavanam, is on the north side of river Arani, which
originates from Pichatur lake and joins with sea at Palaverkadu / Pulicat. This
place was called as Chaturvedapuram.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple is facing east with a temple pond on the east side. A 3 tier Rajagopuram is on the south side.
Vinayagar and Nagars are under the Er-Alinjil tree. Stucco images of Shiva and
Parvati as Rishabaroodar with
Vinayagar and Murugan are on the
entrance to the main temple. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and rishabam are on the
east side of the main temple. Moolavar Sri Nootretteeswarar, Utsava murtis and
Chaturvedapureeswarar are in a straight line facing east. Sivakami, Natarajar,
Vinayagar are in the ardha mandapam. In
Koshtam Vinayagar,
Ambal
Ashtothravalli is in a separate sannidhi immediately after the entrance. Ambal
is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.
In the outer praharam,Vinayagar, Siva Surian, Bairavar, Chandikeswarar, a Shiva
Linga banam near Dakshinamurthy, and Navagrahas.
The
sthala vruksham is Er- alinjil. The speciality of the tree is, after the fruit had
fallen down, the seed will move and join with the tree and slowly it will merge
with the tree. Since the seed climbs – Er, this tree is called as Er-alinjil.

ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum
sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhisthanam. A Three tier Vesara Vimanam is on
the sanctum sanctorum. There is no images in the Tala Koshtams. Shiva,
Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the greeva koshtams.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple belongs to Pallava period. The Pallava King Nandhivarman’s
inscriptions are recorded by the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department in தமிழ் நாடு
கல்வெட்டுக்கள் தொகுதி –XVII, திருவள்ளூர் மாவட்ட கல்வெட்டுக்கள் தொகுதி -1.
நூற்றியெட்டீஸ்வரர் கோயில் அம்மன் சன்னிதி அர்த்தமண்டபத்தில் உள்ள நந்திவர்மனின்
18 ஆம் ஆட்சி ஆண்டு ( 857 CE )சாசனம், பல்லவ கிரந்தம் தமிழ் கலந்த நடையில் எழுதப்பட்டு உள்ளது. ஆணித்தலை எழுத்து வகையில் அமைந்துள்ளது. பல்லவர்க்கே உரிய அழகிய வடிவில் வெட்டப்பட்ட இச்சாசனம் மூன்றாம் நந்திவர்மனுக்குரியதாகும். சத்திய சாளுக்கி என்ற பெயரில் வாணிய செட்டிகள் ஒரு மண்டபம் எடுத்துள்ளனர். தயாசெட்டி என்பவன் ஆணத்தியாகப் பணியாற்றி வந்தான். அஷ்டா தச வருஷம் என்பது பதினெட்டாம் ஆட்சி ஆண்டாகும். என்தலை மேலன என்பது என்றலை மேலன எனப் புணர்ச்சி விதிப்படி சரியாக எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது.
The Nandhivarman-III’s 18th reign year
( 857 CE ) inscription on the wall of the ardha mandapa of Amman shrine of
Nürriyetțu Isvarar temple at Chinnakāvaṇam in Ponneri taluk.
This inscription, written in the Pallava Grantha, Tamil mixed style, is in the
Anithalai script. This charter of the Pallavas, belongs to Nandivarman -III.
The Vaniya Chettiyar have taken a mandapa called Satya Chalukki. Dayachetti was
working as a Anaththi. Aștä dasa means eighteen.
நூற்றியெட்டீஸ்வரர் கோயில் அம்மன் சன்னிதியில் உள்ள பிரித்தானியர் காலத்தைய ( 1830
CE ) கல்வெட்டு தொடக்கத்தில் சிவலிங்கத்தை வழிபடும் நந்தியின் யுடைப்புச் சிற்பம் வளைவுக்குள் உள்ளது. கலியாண்டு, சக ஆண்டு. தமிழாண்டு மூன்றும் இடம் பெற்றுள்ள இக்கல்வெட்டின் தொடக்கப் பகுதி நீங்கலாக எஞ்சியவை அழிந்துவிட்டதால் கல்வெட்டின் முழு விபரம் தெரியவில்லை. எனினும் கி.பி. 1830 வருடந்தோறும் ஏதோ விழாவுக்குக் கொடை அளிக்கப்பட்ட விவரம் தெரிகிறது.
The 19th
Century British period inscription on a separate stone in the Amman shrine of
Sri Nootretteeswarar temple, belongs to 1830 C.E. Some portions were damaged.
At the beginning of the inscription is an embossed sculpture of Nandi
worshiping the Shivalinga. It is known that something was donated to the
festival every year from 1830 CE, onwards.
This
is the birth place of Ramalinga Vallalar’s Mother Chinnammai. After her husband’s
demise, She decided to settle at Chinnakavanam, where their relatives lived.
Whether they moved to Chinnakavanam or not, but Ramalinga Vallalar might have
came to this temple and worshipped Shiva of this temple during his childhood
days.
LEGENDS
As
per the legend, the sage Agasthiyar was once with severe stomach pain due to
the sin. Sri Muruga of Tirutani advised Agasthiyar to construct 108 Shiva
temples and worship Shiva to get rid of the sin. It is believed that this is
the 108th Shiva Linga installed and worshiped by Agasthiyar. Hence
Shiva is called as Nootretteeswarar.

from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri
days, etc,.

The
temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs – 20.00
hrs.
HOW TO REACH
The
temple is on the banks of river Arani and about 2.2 KM from old Ponneri Bus
Stand, 3.0 KM from Ponneri Railway station, 13 KM from Minjur, 20 KM from Periyapalayam, 40 KM from
Koyambedu and 40 KM from Chennai Central.
The
nearest Railway Station is Ponneri.
