A Continuation post to Malayavantha Sri Raghunathaswamy Temple
19th June 2017.
This 16th century CE Pattabhirama
temple is in Varadharammanapattana, about a km from Kamalapura village on the
way to Hampi Power House Camp ( HPC). The temple was supposed to be built by
Thimmaraja during the period of Achyutaraya in 1540 CE.
The temple is facing east is one of the largest
temples built in an area of 163.70 x 93 meters. The temple has two Rajagopurams
on east and south. The east Rajagopuram is of 5 tiers.
The temple is known for its large ornate pillared
Saba mandapas with three entrances, Mahamandapa ( supported by 58 ornate
pillars ) Kalyana mandapa and courtyard with a temple tank in front The
Pillars has the reliefs of avatars of Vishnu, rishis, common men, etc,.
Dwarapalakas are there at the entrance of sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum
consists of sanctum, Antarala, Ardha mandapa and Maha mandapa. Thayar sannidhi is
built like a separate temple with sanctum, Antarala, ardha mandapa and
maha mandapam on the right side of the main temple facing east. The vimanam is
of 2 tiers built with bricks.
The temple is under renovation by ASI.
