Some of the important
features of this temple are...
A Deepasthambam is in
front of the temple and there is no Rajagopuram. There is a small entrance
arch. In Koshtam Dakshinamurthy and Siva Durgai, Brahma is under
the Elephant.
In the outer prakaram
sannadhi for Ambal, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, all are facing east. Since Lord
Shiva, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar and Ambal Loganayaki ( Ambal's image is
made with thiruvasi ) are in a row facing the same direction, called Somaskanda
form.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The
sanctum sanctorum is constructed in a unique fashion with eight elephants
holding the Moolavar sanctum, similar to the Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple of Madurai.
The reliefs on the adhistanam look beautiful.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per one of the inscriptions the temple this temple is called Arumugavelavar Thirukoil. It is believed that this Shiva temple was built during the same period as Vishnu Temple at this place.
LEGENDS
While Shiva
swallowed the poison, which came out of the milk ocean, ( which came out of the Vasuki snake while churning the milk ocean by Devas and asuras ) and the same
was stopped by Ambal by holding at kandam of Lord Shiva is related to
this temple. Hence Shiva is Called Najundeswarar also called Neelakandeswarar.
