The
visit to this Dharmadevi (The Yakshi or the guarding deity/goddess of the 22nd Tirthankara of Neminathar of Jainism) temple at Emapur, near Thiruvennainallur in Viluppuram District, was a part of the 105th Ahimsa walk organized by the Tamil Samanars,
on 06th April 2025. This Dharmadevi is worshipped as Durga by the
local people without knowing, the idol belongs to Jainism. The temple faces
east, and the stucco image of Durga sitting on a Lion is on the top of the mandapam.
Dharmadevi
is the Yakshi or the guarding deity/goddess of the 22nd Tirthankara of
Neminathar of Jainism. She is also called Kushmandi, Ambika, etc.
The
sculpture of Dharmadevi is in the form of a bas-relief on a flat stone. She is in
a sitting posture with her right leg folded and her left leg on the Simha vahana (believed
to be her husband). Samaratharis are shown on both sides. Her two children and the servant maid are shown on both sides. A tree with fruits (vada vruksha) is shown
just behind her head. She wears ornaments around her neck and a padra kundala in
the elongated earlobes. She is shown with two hands, holding a neelothpala flower
bud in the right hand and the left hand on the thigh.
