The
visit to this Sri Kailasanathar temple at Thangi, near Walajabad was a part of the “Maha
Shivaratri 2025 Temples Visit”, on 26th February 2025, organized by Mr. Babu Mano, and
Mr. Suresh Priyan.
This temple is on the banks of the Palar River.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with an entrance arch.
Balipeedam and Rishabam are under a mandapam. A stucco image of a cow doing
abhisheka with milk is on the top of the entrance arch. A Vinayagar sannidhi is
on the left side of the ardha mandapam entrance. Moolavar is on a round avudaiyar.
In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.
In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli devasena
Subramaniar, Aiyyappan, Bairavar, Chandikeswarar, Nalvar, and Navagrahas.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum and ardha
mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a Chozha period upanam and adhistanam.
The adhistanam is of a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy and three patta
kumudam. The sanctum sanctorum above the adhistanam was built with bricks. An
eka tala vesara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Shiva,
Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are on the greeva koshtas.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple belongs to the 10th to
11th century, Chozha period, and the present structure above the
adhistanam was constructed during the 19th or 20th Century.
LEGENDS
This
Sri Kailasanathar temple is on the banks of the Palar River, where the river flows
from south to north. Hence this temple is considered as a holy place equivalent
to Kashi. Devotees can offer to this Shiva considering as Kashi Viswanathar.
It is believed that Ambal in the form of Cow
worshipped Shiva of this temple with her milk.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala poojas, special poojas are
conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Aadi poora sumangli pooja, etc.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
Since oru kala pooja is conducted, the time of
opening and closing are unpredicted.

HOW TO REACH
The Kailasanathar temple is on the south side of the village of Thangi, in the middle of the paddy fields.
The village Thangi is about 1.2 km from Kanchipuram
to Chengalpattu State Highway, 6 km from Walajabad bus stand, and 11 km from
Kanchipuram.
The nearest Railway station is Walajabad.
