The
visit to this Sri Chokkanathar temple at Sirumadurai, in Kallakurichi District, was
a part of the 105th Ahimsa walk organized by the Tamil Samanars on 06th
April 2025.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in the mukha mandapam. Moolavar
is on a round avudaiyar.
In the praharam Vinayagar (Vinayagar is in the form of a bas-relief on a flat stone),
Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar and Ambal. All three temples face
east. A Shiva Linga banam Rishabam, and Chandikeswarar
(on a flat stone) are lying in front of the entrance to the temple.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. The sanctum
sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and
pattikai. The adhistanam alone was constructed with stone. The rest are built
with brick. The koshtas are empty. The prastaram consists of valapi with
madhalai and kapotam with nasi kudus. The vimanam is of eka tala dravida style.
The stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are on the greeva koshtas.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple belongs to the 12th to 13th Century. Pandya
and Vijayanagara period inscriptions are found on the adhistanam. As per the
inscriptions, Shiva was called Azhagiya Nayanar.

Even though the temple is dilapidated, regular oru kala poojas are conducted. No
other special poojas are conducted.

The
temple is on the northeast corner of the village. The temple is 5.6 km from
Thiruvennainallaur, one of the Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam, 17 km from
Viluppuram, and 21 km from Tirukoilur/ Thirukoilure.
The
nearest Railway Station is Viluppuram.
