The
visit to this Sri Krishneswara Temple on the Big Kammala Street now called Jawaharlal Street in Periya Kanchipuram, was a part of the “Maha Shivaratri 2025 Temples
Visit”, on 26th February 2025, organized by Mr. Babu Mano, and
Mr. Suresh Priyan.
This temple is just opposite Piravathaneswara Temple, and about 500 meters before Kanchipuram Railway
station.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
This is a small temple and faces east. Yazhi and
dwarapalakas are on both sides of the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum. A Shiva
Lingam is inside the sanctum sanctorum. Somaskandar is on the back wall of the sanctum sanctorum. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the Shiva Lingam.
ARCHITECTURE
The whole temple was constructed with brick and
cement concrete. The temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum with a small mandapam.
The sanctum sanctorum is rectangular in shape. A Nagara vimanam with 5 kalasas are on the top of the Vimanam. The stucco image of Krishna in a sitting posture is
on the greeva koshtam.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Shiva Lingam belongs to the Pallava period, and the
temple was constructed in recent years.
LEGENDS
It is believed that Krishna worshipped Shiva at
this temple before the beginning of the Bharata war. Hence, Shiva is called Krishneswar.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala pooja, special poojas are
conducted on Maha Shivaratri days.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
Since the orukala pooja is conducted, the opening and
closing times are unpredictable.
