Nadu Palani Vel & Kavadi Pada Yatra from Maraimalai Nagar, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

05, November 2012
One of my friends, Mr Muthu Arunachalam, used to go to Nadu Palani every year by taking "VEL & Kavadi" from Maraimalai Nagar through the Namasivaya Saba, with which he is associated. I also joined him for this 7th yatra to Nadu Palani. The Yathra took us around  40 hours.

On 02nd November, Friday 2012, in the evening by 16.00 Hrs the yatra started from Maraimalai Nagar Balaji Kalyana mandapam with 15 nos, Kavadi of which one is of Rudraksha Kavadi. Morning Homam and poojas were conducted for VEL and KAVADI. We reached Chengalpattu after a brief stay at Mahindra City. The total distance covered was around 12 KM.

On 03rd, November, Saturday, 2012,  early morning 04.00 Hrs started our yathra and reached Karunguzhi around 11.15 hrs. Some of us skipped the morning breakfast at Pattalam. After Lunch at Karunguzhi,  we reached Acharapakkam around 20.30 Hrs. We covered around 40 Km on day two. It was too hot and I found it difficult to walk in the scorching sun. There was a drizzling for a KM stretch. Became too tired and exhausted. I ate tamarind leaves which helped to quench the thirst.

On 04th, November, Sunday, 2012,  we started our yatra by 04.30 hrs and reached Nadupalani around 06.45 hrs. The total distance was approximately 8.00 Km. The total distance of our yatra was around 60 KM.

From Acharapakkam with 15 Kavadi 27 more Kavadis joined ( Locals). In the temple, they have arranged the Paalkudam also. Initially, the Kavadi and Paal kudam went around the temple – Girivalam - and came to the shrine after claiming 127 steps. The shrine is on a small hill. The details and some of the photographs I had already uploaded in my previous post. The food and stay arrangements were excellently made with care.  Those who could not walk were taken through the van. Most of the people walked the last leg of 8 KM. Devotees from Devakottai, Needamangalam, Chettinad, etc participated in the yatra. Bakthi Songs were sung during pooja and yatra  The Yathra went on very well. A strict procedure was adopted for those undertaken by Kavadi and Vel.  Food and water were served to them only after reaching a particular spot. Every time they take the Kavadi after break, they have to take a bath.  Every night long pooja with Bhajan and  Abhishekam were conducted for VEL and Kavadi.
