Sri Veera Anjaneyar Temple / ஸ்ரீ வீர ஆஞ்சநேயர் கோயில், புதுப்பாக்கம் / Pudupakkam, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

Continuation of the previous post Sri Muruganatheeswarar Temple Mambakkam... 

From Mambakkam, turned to left and I proceeded to Pudupakkam, about 4 KM before Kelambakkam. Sri Anjaneyar is on a Hill, left side of main road.

PUDUPAKKAM SRI VEERA ANJANEYAR TEMPLE
Some of the important features of this temple are....
Sarvasakthi Vinayagar Sannidhi is at the base of the  hill. Stucco Periya thiruvadi and Chinna Thiruvadi are at the beginning of steps. The temple is on a small hill with about 100 steps neatly paved. Road facility is also there to climb up to the top of the hill with vehicle.

Moolavar is of relief looking north. The sanctum was originally built with stone and latter new structures were added. Sannadhi of Sri Ramar, Seetha Lakshmana is at the front of Sri Anjaneyar.

Sri Yoga Anjaneyar Aalayam ஸ்ரீ யோக ஆஞ்சநேயர் கோயில், Mehta Nagar, Aminjikarai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

The visit to this Sri Yoga Anjaneyar Temple at Aminjikarai was a part of lesser Known Shiva, Maha Vishnu, Vinayagar, Murugan temples Visit”, in Choolaimedu, Aminjikarai, Chetpet and Choolai areas on 25th September 2022. This is one of the temple built on the banks of Holy River Cooum. This Yoga Anjaneyar temple is on the corner plot of Avvaiyar Street and Rajeswari street in Rajaram Mehta Nagar. A shed is provided in front of the mukha mandapam covering the Avvaiyar Street.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing north and stucco image of Anjaneyar is sitting in Yogasana posture. Moolavar Anjaneyar is also similar to stucco image. Anjaneyar is with 4 hands. While upper hands are holding Sangu and Chakra, the lower hands are with japa mala and chin mudra/jaba mudra. The bas relief of Rama with Sita in Pattabhisheka sitting posture is on the crown. The utsavar is called as Bhaktha Anjaneyar. Moolavar is installed on a well. In koshtam, Danvantri, Hayagreevar and Maha Vishnu as Narasimhar.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple is with a sanctum sanctorum and a mukha mandapam. A two tier dravida stucco vimanam is over the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco image of Maha Vishnu’s dashavatar  are on the greeva koshtam. Stucco image of Rama, Sita, Lakshma and Anjaneyar are on the west side of the mandapam.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple was built in 2009 by the Ramakrishna Bhakta Jana sabha, which was functioning over 30 years. The Anjaneyar murti is very much similar to Sholingur. ( Thanks to Padma Priya for some details on this temple from Gods of Holy river Cooum )

LEGENDS
Yoga Anjaneyar is in Chaturbhujam with 4 hands holding Sangu and Chakra in the upper hands and lower hands are with japa mala and yoga mudra. In one of the legend, Narasimhar had given the Sangu and Chakra to Anjaneyar to protect his devotees.  Even though Anjaneyar is one of the forms of Shri Shiva, ( some says son of  Shiva ), in Yoga Anjaneyar form he is considered as a form of Maha Vishnu. Hence Yoga Anjaneyar is a protector and grant boons to his devotees. Devotees performs Yoga Anjaneyar Homam to invoke his blessings for protection and prosperity.


POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Hanuman jayanthi, Rama Navami in Panguni month, Krishna jayanthi, Vaikunta ekadasi etc,. Ekadhina laksharchana will be conducted on either first or third Sunday of the month Karthigai. Sudarsana, Dhanvantri and hayagreeva Homams are conducted in Tamil month Thai ( Jan – Feb ) for world peace, harmony and prosperity. The Varushotsavam is conducted on 30th April every year. It will be auspicious to do thirumanjanam to get the blessings of Yoga Anjaneyar on Moolam, Amavasai, Pournami, Thiruvonam and Punarpoosam days.

Every day Ko pooja is conducted as soon as the temple opened around 6.45 hrs.

The temple is on the junction of Rajeswari Street and Avvaiyar Street in Rajaram Mehta Nagar, close to Meta Nagar Ground. From Nelson Manickam Road, via Mehta Nagar Main Road can be reached.
The temple is about 1.3 KM from Nungambakkam Railway station, 5.6 KM from Koyambedu Bus Terminus and 5.6 KM from Chennai Central Railway station.

Anjaneyar Temple, On the way to Gundri from Kadambur, in Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to the Anjaneyar Temple was a part of “Hero Stones and Megalithic Monuments Visit in and around Gundri”,  in Erode District on 29th August 2022.


Deity : Sri Anjaneyar

The Anjaneyar is in the form of bas-relief, chiseled on a boulder. The style of Anjaneyar bas-relief looked like Vyasarajar created on many places. The Anjaneyar is looking on the right side and his tail is bent over his head. A bell is tied on the tail. Anjaneya is holding a gatha in his right hand and a neelothpala flower in the left hand. Lot of Trishul  and curved sickles are kept as an offer to Anjaneyar. The Anjaneyar is under worship.

Sri Rama Bhaktha Hanuman Temple / Shri Bhaktha Hanuman Temple, Ramboda, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka.

The Visit to this Sri Rama Bhaktha Hanuman  Temple, at Ramboda, a part of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka was a part of Sri Lanka’s ( Ezha Nadu ) Paadal Petra sthalangal Visit scheduled between 28th November  to 2nd December 2013. Utilising this opportunity, we have Visited some, Shiva, Murugan, Amman Temples and Epic Ramayan associated sites of Sri Lanka.  


Shri Bhaktha Hanuman temple is associated with the Epic Ramayan. In India there were more than 20 Ramayans, like Valmiki Ramayan, Thulasidas Ramayan, Kambar Ramayan etc. In Indian Ramayans, Rama is focussed as God and Ravana is considered as a tyrant who abducted Sita. Similarly, in Sri Lanka too have several Ramayans written by various authors and one such epic Janaki Harana was written by King Kumaradasa ( 506 – 516 CE ), which focuses on abduction of Sita. Vibheesana is focused as the follower of Dharma and Ravana as a great warrior and even won the heart of Lord Shiva. In the epics Hanuman helps Rama, since Rama’s exile from his country. Like any other Gods of Hinduism, this monkey faced Hanuman is worshiped for getting Victory, Courage etc,. This Sri Bhaktha Hanuman temple is on the hill Ramboda, Nuwara Eliya – the City of Lights, in central part of Sri Lanka, where the Hanuman landed in search of Sita. The temple is about a KM off from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya main Road.

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
On the base of this hill there is a small Vinayagar sannidhi called Sri Varadharaja Vinayagar. The Hanuman Temple on a small hill, with neatly paved steps with names inscribed, gifted by the Devotees from India, to climb up from the road. Stucco images of Sri Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman are on the top of the front portico.  Moolavar Hanuman is in in standing posture in anjali hastam about 4.8 meters tall. A Dhyaneswarar /Shiva Lingam, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, are in inner praharam on the back side of the sanctum Sanctorum. 
 
A Meditation hall is at the basement, where a Hanuman’s portrait is hung on the wall.  The Chinmaya Mission Book stall and Vegetarian restaurant is before the temple.

Vinayagar Temple

ARCHITECTURE
The temple about 4 feet high from the ground level with 7 steps. The temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, a maha mandapam and a basement. The sanctum sanctorum is on a padma bandha adhistanam with three patta kumudam. The deity Hanuman is about 4.8 meters ( 18 feet ) tall.  A Three tier Nagara Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Maha nasis are are on the 4 cardinal directions of the sigaram. There is no stucco images on the  Vimanam.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It was Gurudev’s sankalpa, when he visited Sri Lanka in 1980 to set up a spiritual centre at Ramboda. Chinmaya Mission , with the blessings of Gurudev, purchased 10 acres of Land in 1981 at Wvandan Hills and named as “Rambodha”. This is situated in the central part of Sri Lanka 3200 feet above MSL. Originally the temple was existed under a thatched roof. The present temple was built and is being maintained by Chinmaya Mission. Moolavar was sculpted at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu and shifted Colombo through ship and then shifted to site by Road, in procession. Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 08th April 2001, in the holy presence of Pujya Guruji H H Swami Tejomayananda.

A school and tailoring classes are conducted through Chinmaya mission to the under privileged local people as a part of social welfare schemes of Chinmaya Mission.  

LEGENDS
This Hanuman temple sthala purana is associated with the Epic Ramayana. After Ravana abducted Sita to Sri Lanka and kept as a prisoner, Hanuman came in search of Sita. It is believed that Hanuman landed on this hill first, during the search of Sita.

The place Ramboda  means – Rambadai – Rama’s fore, hence it is believed that Rama, collected his force for the war with Ravana at this place.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Special poojas are conducted every full moon day, Hanuman Jayanthi in which local and other country Devotees also participate. Hanuman is decorated in an elaborate manner on that day.  

Special poojas are conducted in the month Margazhi and Thai months ( December – January ). Annadhanam is served on Full moon days.

Kumizhi, Shri Veera Panchamuga Anjaneya Swami Thirukkoil / குமிழி, ஶ்ரீ வீர பஞ்சமுக ஆஞ்சநேயா சுவாமி திருக்கோயில் / Sri Kanniamman Temple, Kumizhi Madura Mettupalayam / Melakottaiyur, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Veera Panchamukha Anjaneyar  and Kanniamman Temples at Kumizhi Madura Mettupalayam/ Melakottaiyur was a part of “Shiva and Vishnu Temples Visit at Urapakkam, Arungal, Kannivakkam, Kumuzhi and Melakottaiyur”, on 19th February 2022.



Main Deity       : Sri Panchamukha Anjaneyar

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..
The temple is facing east with about 20 feet tall stucco image of Anjaneyar at the middle of the Steps ( Pancha Mukhas are. Hanuman, Hayagreeva, Narasimha, Garuda and Varaha ).  Patala Vinayagar is on the left side after the entrance. On the right side is the Murugan Sannidhi and Navagrahas. Behind Anjaneyar Stucco image is the Kannaiamman Shrine ( Sri Vaishnavi Kanni, Sri Subathrakanni, Sri Kaumarikanni, Sri Nagarajakanni, Sri Maheswarikanni, Sri Sumati Kanni and Sri Pattarika Kanni ), on the left and steps leading Panchamukha Anajaneyar Shrine is on the right side.  

The Main sanctum sanctorum of Panchamukha Anjaneyar is on the middle level of the Hill. The idol is made of flat stone like bass-relief. Bunch of Coconuts are tied on both sides of Mukha mandapam for prayers, by the devotees.

HISTORY
The original temple is of 100 to 200 years old and reconstructed during recent years.

A Ramar padam installation is in progress. And also it is proposed to Shift the Shiva Linga at Kanniamman Temple and built a separate Temple on the top of the Hill.

LEGENDS
It is believed that this Panchamukha Anjaneyar will fulfill the wishes, by tying Coconuts at this temple and pray for consecutive nine weeks.  

The significance of Pancha Mukhas are..... 
1. The face towards the East is Sri Anjaneyar, who removes all scars of sin and gives the purity of mind, 
2. The South facing mukha is the Sri Narasimhar, who removes fear of enemies and gives victory, 
3. The West facing mukha is the Sri Garuda, who drives away evil spells, black magic influences and removes all poisonous effects in one’s body,
4. The North facing mukha  is the Varahar, to wards off the troubles caused by bad influences of the planets and shower all prosperity  and Ashta Aishwarya and the last 
5. The face looking upwards of Sri Hayagreeva is for the knowledge, victory, progeny and mukthi.

The  visit to this Sri Ramar temple was a part of Shiva and Vishnu Temple and heritage sites at Vengavasal and Acharavakkam, Manamai & Kadalur Villages along the East Coast Road, visit on 25th December 2021. Thanks to Kesavan for accompanying with me to all these places. Even-though the main temple is dedicated to Sri Ramar, the temple is popularly known for Veera Anjaneyar.

Some of the salient features of this temple are...
The temple is facing east with a balipeedam. Moolavar Sri Ramar is with Sita and Lakshmanan. The Utsavars Sri Srinivasa Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi are in front of the Moolavar.  In Koshtam Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar. 

Veera Anjaneyar / Vira anjaneyar is in a separate sannidhi facing Ramar Temple. Anjaneyar's face is turned towards South. A Deepa Sthambam with donor's / King's image is on the back side of Sri Anajaneyar Sannidhi. Nagars and Vinayagar are under a peepal tree.

ARCHITECTURE
The main temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and an open mukha mandapam.  An ekathala vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. The complete temple was constructed with brick.

The Anjaneyar sannidhi is with sanctum sanctorum only. An ekathala nagara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.  No koshta murtis found in the niches. A Deepa Sthambam with donor / King's image is installed on the back side of the Anjaneyar sannidhi. Stucco images of Anajaneyar is on the Vimanam.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Anjaneyar and the Deepa sthambam belongs to 15th to 16th Century Vijayanagara period. The Donor or the King’s bas-relief in anjali hastam is on the Deepa sthambam. Vijayanagara period inscription tablet is fixed on the Office room wall. During Vijayanagara period, this types of Anjaneyar sculptures are installed and worshiped to increase the strength of the soldiers during wars.

The much damaged 15th to 16th Century Vijayanagara period inscription, refers to this place Vengaivasal forming part of Ulaguyyavanda Chaturvedimangalam in Puliyur Kottam in Jayangonda Chozha mandalam. The object of the record is not clear.

From the above inscription this Village was called as Ulaguyyavanda Chaturvedimangalam, a village gifted to the Brahmins who are well versed in 4 vedas. Thee article published by Thiru Ramachandran ( Thanks to உயர்திரு ராமசந்திரன் ஐயா & the blog

ஸ்வஸ்தி ஶ்ரீ மகாமண்டலேஸ்வரர் பாஷைக்கு தப்புவராயர் கண்டன் வீர நரசிங்கராயருக்கு செல்லா நின்ற ரத்தாஷி வருஷத்து பஞ்சமியும் திங்கள் கிழமயும் திருவோண நக்‌ஷதரத்து நாள் ஜெயங்கொண்ட சோழமண்டலத்து புலியூர் கோட்டத்து.. நாட்டில் வேங்கைவாசலில் உலகு  உய்ய வந்த சோழ சதுர் வேதி மங்கலத்து வேங்கை வா….காவல்….மாநவ … இராசா அவன்….இராசலு அகுதம் பண்… கங்கை கரையில் உமார் பசு(வை) கொன்ற தோஷம் கொள்வான்.

இந்தக் கல்வெட்டின் பொருள்
இக்கல்வெட்டின் முழு தகவல்  நமக்கு கிடைக்கப்பெறவில்லை யெனிலும் மைய்யக்கருத்து, வீர நரசிங்கராயர் என்ற மன்னன் ரக்தாஷி வருடம், பஞ்சமி திதியில் திங்கட்கிழமயில் திருவோண நக்‌ஷ்த்திரத்தில் ஜெயங்கொண்ட சோழ மண்டலத்தில்.. புலியூர் கோட்டத்தில், வேங்கை வாசலில்… சோழ சதுர்வேதி மங்கலத்தில்… (இக்கோயிலை நிறுவினான் என்ற செய்தி இருக்கை கூடும்.  அவ்விவரங்கள் இதில் தெளிவாக இல்லை…) இந்த ஆலயத்திற்கு ஊறு விளைவிப்பவர்கள் குரா பசுவை கொன்ற பாவத்திற்கு ஆளாவார்கள். இது சூரிய சந்திரன் உள்ள வரை ஆகக்கடவாராக என்று உள்ளது…


LEGENDS
It is believed that the Veera Anjaneyar idol was installed by Vyasaraja (1460 – 1539 CE ) Theerthar also known as Chandrikacharya and Vyasatirtha. He was a Madhva scholar and a poet, who follows  Dvaita  school of Vaishnavism.  He was also a patron of Vijayanagara empire. During Vijayanagara empire rule he visited many places of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and installed 732 Anjaneyar idols and this may be one of the them.  Also it was a practice that Vijayanagara kings established Anjaneyar Temples wherever they go.
