Velliangiri Andavar Temple / வெள்ளியங்கிரி ஆண்டவர் கோயில் / “THEN KAILAYAM” - Velliangiri Hills, Poondi in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. TREKKING.2018

01st April 2018
It was planned to trek the Velliangiri hills this year before Chitra Pournami (Chithirai month’s Full moon day) on the night of 30th March 2018. Two first-timers have also joined us this year. We used to start our trekking around midnight, but this year it was delayed by two hours due to a delay of train delay. We reached Coimbatore around 23.45 hrs, hired a Taxi ( Rs 750.00), and reached Poondi, the base of the Hill, around 02.00 hrs. After completing the forest authorities' check, we started our trek.  In spite of this, we could notice plastic waste scattered on the hill. This may be due to not checking throughout the day and allowing shops to function on the hills. I managed to trek without torchlight up to the 2nd hill, and after that, the moonlight diminished due to the dense forest. I was able to watch both the Moon set and the Sunrise from the 7th hill.  Due to the speed of walking, we got separated and reached the top of the 7th hill around 07.30 hrs and had the darshan of Sri Velliangiri Andavar.

OM SHIVAYA NAMAHA.

Due to the heavy rush, we were advised not to stay on the top, so we  started to climb down slowly. The fine powder of soil made it difficult to climb down, and many people surfed and rolled down.  Thought of reaching the 3rd hill before 10.00 hrs to escape from the hot sun, but could not do so due to tiredness. Since the start time was delayed, the climb down also got delayed. Had my breakfast on the 5th hill and had buttermilk on the way.  The hot sun, the knee, and the angle pain delayed me further in reaching the base of the hill. It took almost  2 hours to climb down the first hill from Vellai Pillayar Temple, which took only an hour to climb up. As the tiredness increases, it makes us feel that the steps to climb down also increase, like Hanuman’s tail. Finally, I could reach the base around 15.00 hrs. After thanking Lord Shiva for the peaceful darshan and safe journey/ trekking, I left for Chennai.

The samadhi of Ottan Siddhar is where he constructed the steps of the first 3 hills

Velliangiri Andavar Temple / வெள்ளியங்கிரி ஆண்டவர் கோயில் / “THEN KAILAYAM” - Velliangiri Hills, Poondi in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. TREKKING 2017..

14th April 2017.
This year’s yatra, or the trek to Thenkailayam, aka Velliangiri, was planned along with visiting heritage sites around Coimbatore and Dharma Naicken Kottai (Bhavani Sagar Dam). A few weeks before, the Dharma Naicken Kottai visit was cancelled, and we could visit the other two places with slight modifications in the schedule. Since the Dharma Naicken Kottai was cancelled, we attended the 1000th year of Rajendra Chozha’s crowning function, organised by Palladam Tamil Sangam and Gangai Konda Chozhapuram Mempattu Maiyam. The afternoon was spent visiting Heritage sites around Kangayam along with Sakthi, Srinivasan, and Gowthami.

For the Velliangiri Yatra, every year a few new devotees join me. This year, 6 devotees expressed their willingness, and 4 of them joined me, and the other two made it the next day. Every year, I used to face different experiences, and we made this year’s yatra without much difficulty. Totally 10 devotees started our trekking before midnight on 14th April 2017 after checking for any plastic carry bags and plastic items by the forest authorities. We were asked to remove the labels from the water bottles. Some of the devotees tonsured their heads before starting the trek. The rush was a little high due to Tamil New Year's Day and the Keralites' favourite function of Chithirai Vishu. In the process of trekking, our group got separated due to the style of trekking, fast or slow.

We, five of our group members, reached the hill around 05.30 Hrs and took almost 30 minutes to stand in “Q” for darshan. We missed the opportunity to watch the sunrise. We spent about an hour at the Vattaparai, and at about 08.00 hrs started our return trek. We tried our best to reach the 3rd hill before 10.00 hrs, but could not do so due to tiredness. The scorching sun above our heads slowed us down further. The heat and the hunger worsened the situation further. Finally managed to reach the base temple, Poondi, around 14.00 Hrs. Had taken a rest for about an hour at the mandapa before saying goodbye to each other. Thanks, Lord Shiva, for the successful completion of our yatra.

Every year, I used to get phone calls about the issue of permission from the authorities to climb the  Velliangiri Hills. This year, I spent some time collecting the details and the landline number of the office.

SRI VELLIANGIRI ANDAVAR TEMPLE / HILLS – THEN KAILAYAM - MY TREKKING EXPERIENCE

20th April, 2016.
Do you want to check your health along with ayurvedic medicinal herbs, but without spending money?. If the answer is yes, here is Dr Lord Shiva from Villiangiri, on the western Ghats near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. To reach Lord Shiva’s natural cave temple, you can reach after crossing 7 hills  at an altitude of  2240 meters / 7349 feet above sea level and climbing height of 1200 meters / 3937 feet, only by trekking. After reaching the top of the 7th hill Lord Shiva bless us  and certifies our healthiness.

This is the 4th hill trekking after Othimalai, ,  Chennimalai and  Parvatha malai during this season. The trek to this hill was scheduled on 16th April 2016, Night, planned much earlier self with a friend from Ooty. 2 weeks before 3 more people from my old office expressed their willingness to join with us. On 16th April,  I couldn’t join from Chennai, instead,  joined at Coimbatore Railway station, due to personal reasons. From Coimbatore Railway we took a Taxi ( Rs 1000 taxi fare ) and reached to Poondi the base temple of Velliangiri.

To avoid Chitra Pournami crowd we planned trek 5 days before.   But to our surprise, there was lot of crowd to trek the hill. After clearing all the formalities by the forest department ( removing all plastic bags, polythene bags, even the water bottle labels are removed ) we 5 friends started our trekking around mid night. Before reaching the  first hill we 5 people got separated in to two groups and couldn’t meet till we returned back to the base temple. The path has become very tough compared to the last year due to last year’s rain which washed away the path in many places. We are forced to wait in many places to give way to the devotees coming from the opposite direction.

Finally we reached to top of the Shiva cave temple around 05.45 hours and had the darshan of Sri Manomani Ambal Samedha Sri Velliangiri Andavar. It took almost 5.30 Hrs to trek the hill top from the base. We are very lucky to see the sunrise also  from the top of the hill. After spending about 30 minutes, we had started our return trek. On return also we could not meet our lost friends.

We are able to reach the 3rd hill within 3 hours and escaped from the direct sun heat. It was too hot and made the trekking further difficult.  On the way we had the “kamba kool” ( millet )( there are more than 50 shops on the en-route)  and what we carried to eat could not do so due to tired and sleepy. It took almost same time to reach the base of the hill. During returning I got the neck pain ( always looking down the steps) also the right dislocated leg started paining. With the blessings of Lord Shiva we reached to the Poondi base temple around 11.30 Hrs, without much problem.

We had taken rest up to 18.00 hrs at our Guest house and proceeded to Coimbatore Railway station to catch our train to Chennai. Reached Chennai safely around 07.00 Hrs on 18th April 2016. While travelling on the suburban train, it touched my heart that one of the passenger touched the bamboo stick and worshiped it and inquired a lot about our trekking. Thanks to Lord Shiva for the wonderful Darshan and safe trekking to the Velliangiri Hills.

HOW TO REACH :
The base Poondi is about 40 KM from Coimbatore City  on the way to Siruvani Dam.
Almost 2 KM from Isha Yoga centre.
Buses are available up to Isha and very few busses  are plying to Poondi on normal days and special buses will run during Chitra Pournami day.

Velliangiri Andavar Temple / வெள்ளியங்கிரி ஆண்டவர் கோயில் / “THEN KAILAYAM” - Velliangiri Hills, Poondi in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. Yatra – 2015 - My Experience

05th May, 2015.
This weekend, I undertook one of the most difficult treks to Velliangiri. In 1971, for the first time, I went to Velliangiri during Chitra Pournami day along with my three friends and our instructor from my Polytechnic College. After that, I made the Yatra either before or after Chitra Pournami to avoid the rush. But this year, I would like to make it on Pournami Day, ie, on 03-05-2015.

The train ticket was booked in advance along with April’s visits to Ooty. Started my Yathra on 02-05-2015 through the Kovai Express, and two of my friends joined me at the Railway station. During my train journey, I happened to meet one of the retired staff of my old Institute (Govt Polytechnic College, Coimbatore). We exchanged our past memories. Along with my friends, we reached our Guest House around 22.45 hrs. After a quick refreshment, we started our yathra to Poondi, the Base Temple. We were stuck near the Forest Department check post due to a Traffic Jam. We did not know when it would clear. Decided to walk this additional distance of 4 km. After crossing about a km, we got the special bus before the Isha Yoga Centre, which came through the shortcut route.

At the base temple, there was a lot of crowd, and we had to wait for another hour to purchase bamboo walking sticks. After the darshan of Sri Velliangiri Andavar at the base temple and the Forest Department's check-up, we started our trek around 00.00 Hours. All the plastic bags and carry bags were removed, and newspapers were issued for wrapping. Even water bottle labels were also removed and advised to carry back to the base and deposit in the dustbin. But none of them adhered to the forest officials' request, and bottles, plastic bags & biscuit pocket wrappers were strewn throughout the route. The climate was good, and there was no sign of rain. (Two times the hill experienced rain during the past week.)

Without any problem, we reached the 2nd hill. Suddenly, there was a traffic jam, and people could not move up or down due to the narrow path. This was due to the selfish attitude of the people not giving way to others. We were stranded for more than 3 hours in the same spot. The jam cleared around 05.30 hrs, and we started trekking further.

The panoramic view of the 7th hill from the 6th hill top.

My ambition of watching the sun rise from the 7th hill was not fulfilled. (Otherwise, I might not have the view due to the clouds).  Reached Top Hill around 09.00 hrs on 03-05-2015. At the entrance of the cave, there was a long queue, which took around ½ hour to have the Darshan of Lord Shiva. All the pain vanished after the darshan of Lord Shiva. Nobody was allowed to stay near the cave shrine due to the heavy rush. Volunteers applied the vibhuti on the forehead of all devotees, and vibhuti packets were also distributed. Donations were asked to be deposited in the Hundi.

A Shiva Linga on the 7th hill. It was understood that this is the samadhi of a Devotee who had laid the steps for the three hills from his young age.

After a brief meditation at Vattaparai, we trekked down. The water in the Andi Sunai was completely spoiled by the devotees, and the water became red in colour. On return, we trekked slowly, taking rest at many places, and reached the base Temple around 16.00 hrs. I could not match my old record speed due to the leg injury and dislocation of the ankle joint. This time, I saw some of the young ladies were also trekking, in addition to the old and small girls.

From the base to our guest house, we had chosen public transport up to Alanthurai and from there by an auto, since our called taxi could not reach the base due to traffic. The Govt organised a lot of special buses from Gandhipuram to Poondi on this Chitra Pournami day. While returning, we happened to see that the Isha parking lot was occupied by more than 200 buses and 500 cars. At least 4 lakhs to 5 lakhs devotees might have visited the Cave shrine. Reached Chennai around 22.25 hrs through the Alleppey – Dhanbad Express on 04-05-2015.

I expressed my sincere thanks to my young friends, Mr Vijayan, Mr Arun, and Mr China Kumar for accompanying me on the Velliangiri Yatra.

Thanks to Lord Shiva for the wonderful darshan on this Manmatha Year Chitra Pournami day
