To make them realise their ignorance, Lord Shiva gave the darshan as a Shiva Jyothi/ a column of fire, and asked them to find out the start and end of him. Maha Vishnu took the form of Varaha and excavated the earth to find the start of Lord Shiva. Brahma took the form of Bird Annam and flew up and up. Both Maha Vishnu and Brahma couldn’t find the start and end of Lord Shiva and accepted Lord Shiva as the only great of all and worshipped him.
