This temple was many times subjected to the flood in River Kaveri and was covered under sand dunes. It is believed that during Arcot Nawab’s invasion, the temple was under sand dunes and hence this temple was not damaged much.

As per the inscription available Kanchi mutt, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal visited this temple in 2000.

Kept upside down

LEGENDS
It is believed that Ambal Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple in the form of Chakkaravaha ( Pull ) bird, hence the place is called as Tirupullamangai.

This is the 5th temple of Saptha Sthana temples around Chakkarapalli. The Sapta Rishis and Sapta Matrikas worshiped Lord Shiva of Chakramangai, Ariyamangai, Soola mangai, Nandi mangai, Pasumangai ( PasupathiKoil ), Thazhamangai and Pullamangai. Lord Shiva of Pasupathy Koil was worshiped by Kamadhenu.

As per the Legend, Saptamatrikas worshipped Shiva of these Saptamangai sthalas and had different darshans. After hearing this, ma Parvati also worshipped Shiva and had the darshan of Shiva’s nethradarshan at Chakkarapalli ( Sri Chakravaheswarar ), Ganga darshan at Ariyamangai ( Sri Harimuktheeswarar ), Trisooladarshan ( AshthraDevar ) at Soolamangai ( Sri Kirthivaheshwarar ), Pada / kazhal darshan at Nandhimangai ( Sri Jambunathar ), Damarudarshan at Pasumangai ( Sri Pasupatheeswarar ), Naga darshan at Thazhamangai ( Sri Chandramouleeswarar ) and swallowing alakala poison darshan at Pullamangai ( Sri Brahmapureeswarar ). Hence these 7 temples are called as Saptha mangai sthalams.
