Thiruperumandar Udaya Nayanar Shiva Temple / Madathu Koil, Nanguppatti / Marudampatti, Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Thiruperumandar Udaya Nayanar Shiva temple / Madathu Koil, at Nangupatti ( actually this temple is at Marudampatti may be a part of Nangupatti ) was a part of Heritage Visit to temples around Keeranur in Pudukkottai District, organized by “Yaaooyakay – யாஊயாகே” group on 2nd and 3rd, October 2021.
 

Moolavar : Thiruperumandar Udaya Nayanar

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
Ths temple is facing west with a Rishabam, Balipeedam and a Dwajasthambam base. Moolavar is of swayambhu on a round avudayar. Loose sculptures of Jyeshta Devi / Thavvai, Brahma, Murugan as Brahmasastha, Bhairavar, Ambal, Suryan, Chandran, Durgai, Ambal, Maha Vishnu, Chandikeswarar are in the ardha mandapam. The Koshtas are empty with out images. A Mandapam and Ambal temple are on the out side the temple.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and Thiruchutru maligai. 

Upa peedam… the adhistanam is on a upapeedam with 3 angam, upanam, kandam and pattigai. Pattigai is not projecting equal to upanam.

Adhistanam… From bottom to top are Upanam, padmam, kampu, jagathi, small padmam, kandam, small padmam, kadaka vrutha kumudam, small padmam, kampu, kandam, kampu, Oorthuva padmam, kapotam and kampu. As per Manasaram this type of adhisthana is Padma Kesara Adhistanam.  Kapota is decorated with nasis.

Vedhikai… Vedhikai comprises of Kandam ( flower motifs on kandapadam ), kampu, Oorthuva padmam, pattigai, and kampu.

Bhitti…. The bhitti consists of Karnapathi, Saleelantharam, Salaipathi, Saleelantharam and karnapathi. Karnapathi and Saleelantharam are built with 8 flat surfaces Vishnukantha pilasters.  Salaipathi is built with 16 flat surface Chandra kantha pilasters. Karnapathi and salaipathi are little projected from mana soothra. Sala is of mandapa type with adhistanam, Padas, prastaram, similar to Vimana. 

In saleelantharam twin pilasters and maha nasi forms as thorana. Kadam Thorana patti are beautifully carved with Maha Vishnu, Agasthiyar, Pulathiyar worshiping Lord Shiva images.  Pillars are square at the base with nagabandham, malaikattu, kalasam, thadi, kumbha, mandai, palakai, veerakandam and pushpa pothyal. The Koshta mandapas Chitrakanda base pillars with Kazhuthu pothyal supports utharam.






Prastaram… Prastaram conists of Utharam, Vajanam, valapi, Kapotam, alingam, anthiri and prati vajanam. Oorthuva padmavari is in valapi.  Nethra Nasi, alpa nasi, kodipalai and maiyapalai are on the kapotam like flower petals are staged.

Viyyalavari... Viyyalavari may be similar to Pandya style, even though they belongs to 17th to 18th century, the animalas are like idols and natural as bas-reliefs. Makarathunda is little big. Vimanam is yet to be reconstructed. The pillar mandi below the palakai is with two layers of lotus pedestal is worth to watch.



Antarala… The bitti of the antarala is little wide with two kumbha latha, shown from Vedhikai to Uthiram.

Ardha mandapam… the adhistana to prastaram is extended to Ardha mandapam. Two Koshtas are also shown on the bhitti. 

Thiruchutru maligai … prakara… this is on a three anga upapeedam with vettu pothyals  is in dilapidated or looks incomplete. Roof is also there partially.







At the entrance of the mandapa, makara thorana, Vinayagar, Maha Lakshmi, Saraswati’s bas-reliefs are on the kada portions. Viyyala hastha sobana and pillars are beautifully done.

The the base of the outer compound wall and Gopura are only available at present. The remains indicates that second prakara might have been existed.  Balipeedam and Kalasa of a Vimanam are also found near the Rishaba mandapam. 

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the inscription this temple was called as "madathu koil" and Lord Shiva was called as "Thiruperumandar Udaya nayanar".

The inscription on the prakara wall records as ஸ்வத்திஸ்ரீ (…) உடையார் திருப்பெருமானாண்டார் நாயனார்திருவெடுத்துக்கட்டி உடையார் கங்கையராயர் அகம்படியில் உய்யாந் திருவனான வீரசிங்கபந்மந் (..)

The Vijayanagara King Veera Rayanna period inscription inscribed on the Amman Sannidhi adhistanam describes the conflicts between two groups was solved. The inscription  reads as ….

ஸ்வஸ்தி ஸ்ரீமந் மகாமண்டலீசுரன் எம்மண்டலமும் கொண்டருளிய ஸ்ரீ வீர இராயண்ண உடையார் திருஇராச்சியம் பண்ணி அருளாநின்ற விகாரி வருஷம் ஆனி மாதம் 25 நாள். பேராம்பூர் [வரந்]தரு [தேவ]ன் அழகியார் ஆன நரசிஞ்க தேவர் உள்ளிட்டாரோம் கீழைக்குறிச்சி ஊரவற்குப் பகை ஒருக்கம் தீந்து கல்வெட்டிக் குடுத்தபடி முன்பே எங்கள் பேர[னார்] சேமநரசிஞ்கத் தேவர் நாள் முதல் அடைக்கலங்காத்தார் நரசிஞ்கதேவர் நாள்அளவாக உற்று நிலை அற்ற வினோதப் பகையாய் அங்கும் இஞ்கும் நால்பது நூறு மனிதரும் பட்டு சிறைமாடும் பிடித்து ஆறாப் பகையாக கிடக்கையில் அடைக்கலங்காத்தார் நரசிஞ்கத்தேவர் நாளிலே இவரும் மேற்படி சேமரும் மேற்படி குமு[த]ய நாயநாரும் நாங்களும் எங்களில் பொருந்தி கீழைக்குறிச்சி ஊரவரை அழைத்து விட்டு உங்களுக்கும் எங்களுக்கும் ஒரு உற்று நிலை அற்ற பகைக்கு விபரீதமாய் இருக்க வேண்டுவதில்லை என்றும் அங்குப்பட்டது அறுதியாக மேல்பட்டு பேராம்பூர் கீழைக்குறிச்சியும் கீழைக்குறிச்சி பேராம்பூருமாக ஒன்றுபட நடத்திப் போதக்கடவோம் என்று நாங்கள் அரன்குளவர் சன்னதியிலே அறுதி பண்ணிக்குடுத்து அந்த அறுதிபடியிலே இற்றை வரையும் நடத்தி போதுகையில் இற்றை நாள் தென்மலை நாட்டாரும் _ _ _ னூர் புதுவயல் ஊரவரும் முதுசொற்குடி நாட்டாரும்

முன்பாக கல்வெட்டிக் குடுக்கையில் இன்னாள் முதல் சந்திரஆதித்தவரையும் பேராம்பூர் அரசு வெறுத்த இடம் கீழைகுறிச்சி வெறுத்தும் கீழைகுறிச்சி வெறித்த இடம் பேராம்பூர் அரசு வெறுத்தும் இரண்டு நினையாமல் நடத்தப் போதக் கடவோமாகவும்

இரண்டு நினைத்தோமாகில் எங்கள் வழிபடு தெய்வமான நாயனார் திருப்பெருமானாண்டார் சீபாதம் தப்பினோம் ஆவதாகவும். இப்படிக்கு நரசிஞ்க தேவர் எழுத்து. இப்படி அறிவோம் தென் மலைநாட்டவரோம். இப்படி அறிவோம் கீரனூர் புதுவயல் ஊரவரோம்.

இம்மரியாதி ஒழுந்து கீழைகுறிச்சி ஊரவர் இரண்டு நினைத்தோம் ஆகில் நாயனார் உடைய நாயனார் சீபாதம் தப்பினோம் ஆவதாகவும். இப்படிக்கு ஊற்கு சமைந்து இவ்வூர் கணக்கு உடையான் ஒடுவாய் நாட்டு வேளான் எழுத்து.

விளக்கம்: 1419 பொ. . விகாரி ஆண்டு ஆனி 25-ம் நாள் (சூன் 21) விசயநகர வேந்தர் இராயண்ண உடையார் ஆட்சிக் காலம். பேராம்பூர் வரந்தரு தேவன், அழகியார் ஆன நரசிங்க தேவர் உள்ளிட்டார் கீழைக்குறிச்சி ஊராரோடு பகை உணர்வை முடித்து வைத்த வகைமை யாதெனில் முன்பே இவர்களது பேரன் சேமநரசிங்கத் தேவர் தொடங்கி அடைக்கலங்காத்த நரசிங்கதேவர் வரை உண்மைக் காரணம் இல்லாத பகையாக அங்கும் இங்கும் 40 பேர் 100 பேர் இறந்தும் மாடுகளை சிறைபிடித்தும் நீங்காத பகை ஏற்பட்டு இருந்தது. அடைக்கலங்காத்தார் நரசிங்க தேவர் காலத்தில் அவரும் மேலே குறிப்பிட்ட சேமரும் மேற்படி சாதி நாயநாரும் பேராம்பூராரும் நரசிங்க தேவருடன் கூடி கீழைக்குறிச்சி ஊராரை அழைத்து வந்து உங்களுக்கும் எங்களுக்கும் உண்மையான பகைக்கு காரணம் இல்லாத போது நமக்குள் இனி பகை வேண்டாம் என்றும் முடிவாகி அதன்மேற்பட்டு பேராம்பூர் கீழைக்குறிச்சியாகவும் அவ்வண்ணமே கீழைக்குறிச்சி பேராம்பூராகவும் ஆகி ஒற்றுமையாய் நடந்துகொள்வோமாக இறைவன் திருமுன்பாக முடிவு செய்து அந்த முடிவுப்படியே இன்றுவரை நடந்துவருகின்றனர். இப்போது தென்மலை நாட்டார், புதுவயல் ஊரார், முதுசொற்குடி நாட்டார் முன்பாகவும் அந்த முடிவைக் கல்வெட்டிக் கொடுக்கும் இந்நேரத்தில் இன்று முதல் ஞாயிறும் நிலவும் உள்ள நாள் வரையில் பேராம்பூர் அரசு கீழைக்குறிச்சியை விரும்பாமல் பகை கொண்டது என்றும் அதே போல் கீழைக்குறிச்சி விரும்பாமல் பகை கொண்ட இடம் பேராம்பூர் அரசு என்ற இரண்டாம் கருத்து, மாற்று கருத்து கருதாமல் நடந்து கொள்வோம். அவ்வாறு மாற்று கருத்து கருதினால் நாங்கள் வழிபடும் தெய்வமான திருப்பெருமானாண்டார் திருப்பாதத்தை விலகினோம் என்றாவதாகும் என்று தென்மலைநாடு, புதுவயல் ஆகிய ஊரார் முன்னிலையிலும் நரசிங்க தேவர் மீண்டும் உறுதி ஏற்கின்றார். இந்த உறுதியை ஏற்று, மதித்து நடக்கும் வழக்கத்தை விட்டு கீழைகுறிச்சி ஊரார் மாற்று கருத்து கொண்டால் அவரது இறைவனான உடைய நாயனாரின் திருப்பாதத்தை விட்டு விலகியவர் என்று ஆகிவிடுவார் என்று ஊரின் விருப்பிற்கு இசைந்து கீழைக்குறிச்சி. கணக்கு_உடையவனான ஓடுவாய்நாட்டு வேளான் எழுதி கையொப்பமிட்டான்.  பார்வை நூல்: தென்னிந்தியக் கல்வெட்டுகள், தொகுதி 34, பக். 318-319. Kulothunga Chozha’s 20th reign year inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp by Kulothunga Chozhakadambarayan, for which 100 Sheeps / Goats were gifted to this temple and the same was received by Siva Brahmins. ( Avani month – மகர ஞாயிறு ).

Rajathiraja’s 13th reign year inscription records that the Nrutha mandapa was built by Maalaipothan. Another inscription of the same year starts with his meikeerthi and details are much damaged.

Kulothunga Chozha-III’s 13th reign year inscription records that Jayangonda Chozhamandalathu, Kalathur Kottathu Marudhathur  Marudhathurudaya kundran Thiruchitrambalamudayan had won Kudikadu alias Irumboothi as a gift after winning over a poetry singing from Vadakonadu Payyur Thiruchitrambalamudayan Vedavanamudayan on a Kanni Gnayiru ( month ), Monday, Utharatathi Nakshatra day.

Kulothunga Chozha-III’s 20th reign year inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp for which 100 sheep / Goats was gifted, on Kanni Gnayiru Poorva pakshathu Ekadasi Thursday. The same was received by Siva Brahmanas and assured to burn till the Sun and Moon exists.

Kulothunga Chozha-III’s 35th reign year inscription records the endowment of Pooja and Thirupani by, one of the  Chozhavalanattu Arayars  called Urudaya Peruman Ethirili Chozha Kadambarayan alias Ulagudaya Nayanar. He gave this gift of Kudikadus in Punnangudi and its surroundings through Neer varthu ( நீர்வார்த்து - After this ritual, He / She will not claim anything from the gift ).

Sundara Pandyan’s 13th reign year inscription records the endowment of doing Thirukappu to Avudayar and Nachiyar ( Shiva and Ambal ) on Mesha NayiRRu poorva pakshathu Saturday, Chithirai Thirunal, by Mayilapur Agastheeswaramudayar Temple’s Thevaradiyar Azhagiya Nachi PiLLandaL alias Thiruvenazhigai Manickam. For the same She had deposited 1000 kasu in the pandaram / Treasury after neer varthu நீர்வார்த்து - After this ritual, He / She will not claim anything from the gift ) to Sri Adhi Chandeswara Swamigal. With the money deposited the treasury authorities agreed to purchase, Thirumanthirakodi, Oil for Lamp, beetle nut leaves, Rice for Naivedyam, Vegetable for KaRiyamuthu, Thirumelpoochu, Chengazhuneer thirupallithamam / Garland for the function.  

Sundara Pandya’s 17th reign year inscription records the gift of Periya Nallur Keezhai Vayal ( east side field ) and Melai Vayal ( west side field ) as a Irayili Thirunamathu kani.

Sundara Pandya’s 10th Reign year inscription records the gift of Mettukulam, field and Madapuram as kudineenga thevadhanam ( without abolishing the previous rights ) by this temple’s Thevaradiyar Kariyar’s daughter  to Azhagiya Varadar.

Hero Stones / Veerakarkal / Veerakallu / வீரகற்கள்/ நடுகற்கள், Nanguppatti / Marudampatti, Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Hero stones at Nangupatti ( actually these Hero stones are at Marudampatti, may be a part of Nanguppatti ) was a part of Heritage Visit to temples around Keeranur in Pudukkottai District, organized by “Yaaooyakay – யாஊயாகே” group on 2nd and 3rd, October 2021.  The 4 Hero stones are installed facing east, just opposite to the Nangupatti Thiruperumandar Shiva temple.


The first hero stone…  The Hero is in standing posture with left hand is in raised position and holding a bow. The right hand is holding a sword tied to hs hip. He is wearing half dress below his waist. He is looking straight and his tuft is shown on his right side.


The Second Hero Stone … The second hero is shown similar to the first one. His half dress knot is shown on this left side.


The third Hero Stone… In This hero Stone, the hero’s left hand is shown in raised position holding a shield. The right hand is holding his tuft and tuft is shown straight. He is wearing a half dress, the knot is shown on his left side. In addition to the hero, there is a woman / Man is hown on his right side holding a sword / kattar in left hand. Since the hero stone is submerged up to the bottom image’s neck, the full details are not known.



The fourth hero stone… this hero stone is more or less similar to the first Hero. In tis the hero is shown standing straight samabhanga posture and looking staring. He is wearing  a half dress, the knot and the frill are also shown. He is holding a big bow in the left hand  and shown from his toe to his head. The right hand is holding a sword tied to his waist. His tuft is shown on the right side. The hero is wearing ornament on his neck  and hands. Probably this hero may be a head of the group. 
 

One of the herostone has the inscription. As per the inscription KuRRiyan of Sirupirai was killed due to stabbing by Urathur Nattu Peraiyan. The original inscription reads as…..

  3. மகந் குற்றியாந் உரத்
  4. தூர் னாட்டு பேரைய
  5. னுய் மகந் குத்தி
  6. பட்டாந்
