Vembakottai Excavations / Vembakottai Archaeology Survey / வெம்பக்கோட்டை தொல்லியல் களம், Vijayakarisalkulaam, Kottai Medu, Vembakottai, Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this  Archaeological Excavation site  at Vembakottai in Virudhunagar District was a part of “Temples, Heritage Sites and archaeological excavation sites Visit around Thoothukudi”,  between Dec 1st and 2nd December 2023.

Since March last year, the state archaeology department has been exploring the archaeological site at Vembakottai, 15 km away from Sivakasi, in Virudhunagar District and completed the first phase of the excavation in September 2022. The second phase of excavation is in progress. The first phase at the 25 acres of the mound at Vaipparu bank unearthed gold ornaments, terracotta items, dolls, bangles made of conches, ivory ornaments, glass beads and pendants among others. Altogether 3,254 antiquities were unearthed in the first phase.

Excavation site Director Pon Baskar said that they were finding 60 to 65 antiquities every day. The antiquities could be estimated to 2,000 years old and further research to ascertain the exact age is underway, he added.

In the first phase of excavation 16 trenches were dug, antiquities including copper coins, shell bangles, smoking pipes, glass beads among others were unearthed.

The second phase of excavation was commenced on April 6th 2023 and 6 trenches are dug. Around 1780 antiques ivory dice, copper coins, terracotta figurines and shell bangles are being unearthed so far during the excavation. These gold pieces unearthed in the second phase were found at a depth of 1.15 metre and 1.59 metre in two different trenches at the site. A mangalsutra was also excavated in the second phase of excavation.

One of the celebrated findings of Vembakottai excavation  was  the gold ornaments. As per the site director Pon Baskar, one gold piece was a conical-shaped shaped ornament while the other was a gold plate-like plece. The ornament weighed 2.2 gram with 4.3 mm length and 6.2 mm diameter and the gold plate weighed 2 gram with 8.8 mm length and 7.2 mm breadth.

An on site  exhibition was constructed by the state archaeology Department and the same was inaugurated by the State ministers Thangam Thennarasu and KKSSR Ramachandran, on May 23 this year. The site exhibition displays the 3,254 antiquities excavated in the first phase.

Vembakottai is about 15 KM from Sivakasi, 31 KM from Kovilpatti,  51 KM from Virudhunagar, 97 KM from Madurai and 562 KM from Chennai.

Bhuminathaswamy Temple / Sri Thirumeninathar Temple / அருள்மிகு திருமேனிநாதர் திருக்கோயில், திருச்சுழி / Tiruchuli, Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu.

வாழ்த்து
திங்கள் மும்மாரி பெய்க புரவலர் செங்கோல் ஓங்க
மங்கையர் கற்புநீட மாநிலஞ் செழித்து வாழ்க
புங்கவர் கருணைகூர்க பூசுரர் சுருதி பொங்க
சங்கரன் திருவெண்ணீறும் சைவமும் தழைக்கமாதோ

This is the 256th  Thevaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 12th sthalam of Pandya Naadu near Aruppukottai. This place was called as Thiruchuzhiyal during 6th to 7th Century, now called as Tiruchuli. Tiruchuli is on the banks of river Gundar ( Bagavari River ). This is also the birth place of Ramana Maharishi.


As per Sekkizhar, Sundarar and Cheraman Perumal came to this temple after worshiping Sri Ramanathaswamy of Rameswaram.

Sundarar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. In addition to this, Lord Shiva was praised in Tiruchuli Puranam, Tiruchuli Venba, Andhathi, Thiruchuliyal kombila Venba, Thirusulapura Mahatmyam, Thunai Malai Ammai, Pillai Tamil and Thiruchuliya KayiRRuppinnal.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
The temple is facing east with a 7 tier Rajagopuram and a mandapam. The Temple tank is in front. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are in Kambathadi mandapam. Vinayagar and Murugan are on both side of the mandapam.  Moolavar is of swayambhu on a square Avudayar. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.

In prakaram Sthala Vinayagars ( Thavara Vinayagar, Bodhi Vinayagar, Arasu Vinayagar, Veladi Vinayagar, and Tharumathavara Pillayar ), Natarajar Sabha ( Natarajar, Sivakami, Pathanjali, Viyagrapadar ). Usha, Prathyusha, Suryan, 63var, Santhanachariyar, Saptamatrikas, Gautama maharishi, Agaligai. Somaskandar, Kasi Viswanathar, Chuzhikai Govindar with Boomineela Devi and Chandikeswarar.

Pralaya Vidangar is in a separate Temple built by the Devakottai Nagarathars. Nandhavanam and Palani Andavar shrine  are on opposite to this shrine.  

Ambal is in a separate Temple like facing east. Ambal is in thiripanka. A Srichakaram is chiseled on the stone ceiling of the Ambal sannathi.  12 Rasis are also chiseled on the stone ceiling  of the front mandapa.

ARCHITECTURE
The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and Artha mandapam. Sanctum is in the form of Moat /Ahazhi. It is a big temple. The corridor is long with unique features similar to Pandya Nadu Temples.  Vyaghrapada statue is in the Sabha mandapam. The spout of the outlet water from the roof top  looks with crocodile's head. The sanctum sanctorum roof water is channeled through a stone pipe (big) on either side  of the Sanctum is an unique feature of this temple. As per the architects this temple was constructed ( may be smaller ) similar to Madurai and Rameswaram.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS.
Since This temple was praised by Sundarar, this temple might have been existed before 7th Century and reconstructed / expanded  during  Pandyas, Chozhas and Vijayanagaras. As per the inscriptions this place was called as Thiruchuzhiyal  and Lord Shiva was called as Pralayamkatha Vidangar.

Parakrama Pandyan’s period inscription records that, this temple’s Sanctum Sanctorum was built by him. From Sundarar’s thevaram the Sanctum Sanctorum has the tall vimana. After Vijayanagaras, this temple was reconstructed / renovated by  Nattukottai Nagarathars.

There are 3 inscriptions recorded from this temple.  Rajaraja –I period inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp  and another starts with his mei keerthi ie his Title.

Saka 1152 ie 1230 CE inscription is incomplete,  records the defeat of Jananathan ... (?)

LEGENDS
Maha Vishnu, Indran, Brahma, Suryan, Bhoodevi, Gautama, Agalya, Kanva Munivar, Arjuna, Chithrangathai and Cheraman Perumal,  worshiped Lord shiva of this temple.

It is believed that Lord Shiva, during piralayam, sent all water in form of bubbles to this Kavvaikadal Theertham. This place was praised as Vayalur, Mukthi puram, Avartha puram, Shula puram, Arasavanam, Chuzhigai and Chuzhikapuri. 

When Sundarar was in this place, Lord Shiva came in his dream and asked him to come to Thirukanaper ( Kalayarkoil ) in the form of Kalai ( Young man ) with a chentu in one  hand and Chuzhi in the forehead. 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Navaratri in Puratasi ( October – November ),  Avani Moolam in Avani ( August – September ), Chithirai Vishu ie Tamil New Year day April 14, Mondays / Somavaram  of Karthigai month ( November – December ), Aadi Thabasu ( July – August ), Thaipusam in Thai ( January- February ), 10 days festival / Brahmotsavam with Car & Thirukalyanam  in Panguni ( March – April ).

Frequent buses are available from Aruppukottai. Buses from Madurai to Manamadurai  passes through this place Tiruchuli.
The temple is 15 KM Aruppukkottai, 43 KM from Manamadurai,  55 KM from Madurai, 66 KM from Sivaganga and 510 KM from Chennai.
