Adichanallur Archeological Site, Vellur, Adichanallur, Thoothukudi District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this  Archaeological Excavation site  at Adichanallur in Thoothukudi District was a part of “Temples, Heritage Sites and archaeological excavation sites Visit around Thoothukudi”,  between Dec 1st and 2nd December 2023.

The ancient archaeological site at Adichanallur has been declared as one of the five “Iconic Sites” in the Union Budget of 2020-2021.  As per the Site Development plan, fresh explorations / excavations related to archaeological remains at Adichanallur have found by the archaeological Survey of India, Trichy Circle. Adichanallur is a small Village ( 8° 37" 47.6’ N: 77°  52’ 3497 ) lies  on the right bank of river Thamiraparani, in Srivaikundam taluk in Thoothukudi District of Tamil Nadu.

This Adichanallur archaeological site belongs to Iron age, spreads over 125.04 acres,  on both sides of the Adichanallur Channel and Karungulam Village roads. ( Tirunelveli to Srivaikuntam ). This archaeological site is protected under the “Ancient Monuments and Preservation act 1904”, by the Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI ), since 1921. The Archaeological remains spreads beyond this protected site too.

In the Year 1902 – 04, the area were extensively surveyed on either side of the river by Alexander Rea ( Former Superintend of ASI ) and around 38 sites are identified. On gravelly mounds were identified by him. Among the many Iron Age sites, Adichanallur site appears to be the most extensive  and also the well protected one. The site locally referred to as “porambu” meaning dry elevated mound.

Earlier investigations
The site was first discovered by Dr Jagor of Berlin, an ethnologist and explorer in 1876. A lot of objects such as earthen utensils and considerable iron objects besides skeletal remains from the pits dug for mining gravel were collected by him. The artefacts were taken by Dr Jagor which is presently displayed in Ethnological Museum, Berlin, Germany. Subsequently, the site was extensively explored and excavated by Alexander Rea of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1902- 1905 and was further excavated by T Sathyamurthy of the same organisation in 2004- 05.

Excavated Materials ( 1876 – 1905 )
The excavated  objects include finely made ceramics of various kinds such as black –and-red ware, red ware, black polished ware, and white painted black- and-red-ware. The metal objects like sword, knife, spear, arrow head, trident, etc,. The artefacts in bronze articles such as bangle, ring, decorated  stand, etc. Majority of the skeletal remains were found in secondary context include Bronze and iron objects such as hoe –spades, triple forded spears, mother goddess, animals, birds etc,. Gold ornaments, such as rings and diadems are unique to Adichanallur and such artefacts are rarely reported from any other urn burial sites in Tamil Nadu. The uniqueness of the bronze objects, quality of Iron artefacts and divergence  of … ceramics led the Archaeological Survey of India to re-excavate the site in 2004 – 2005.

Excavations ( 2004 – 2005 )
During the first phase of excavations in 2004, six trenches were laid out measuring 60 x 20 m were excavated in the southern part of the mound which are the remarkable findings. The excavation revealed huge quantity of materials in the form of urns, metal objects and other antiquities and skeletal remains conforming its archaeological potential. In continuation of the earlier period  ASI initiated further investigation in the year 2021 – 22.

மேட்டுப்பகுதி A, B and C என்று பிரிக்கப்பட்டு அகழ்வாய்வுகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.

The newly established Archaeological Survey of India Trichy Circle under the direction of Dr Arunraj,. T, present archaeological excavations at Adichanallur resumed on 10-10-2021 ( as per part of the Iconic site development and onsite museum ). After an extensive structure was observed that the north –eastern  side of the mount  was least disturbed portion  of the site. It was also over seeing the huge lake of Adichanallur Village and it was also the highest point on the ridge measuring 10 meter  in elevation. Hence the north-eastern portion  of the Adichanallur mound sloping  towards east was chosen for excavation, The fill was hard and compact and the colour of the top layer varied from yellowish brown to brown. At places the seems mixed small pieces of quartz and murram. The site did not reveal any surface indications of the buried. The entire protected mount was re-surveyed with application of scientific techniques such as photogrammetric geographic information system, remote sensing tools. Based on the analysis of the data, three potential locations were identified keeping in view of the archaeological, geo – spatial and scientific data, the entire site / mound is divided in to three localities namely Locality A, B and C and the excavations was initiated in all these three localities and important findings are studied to understand the cultural significance of the site in nut-shell.

INTRODUCTION TO IRON AGE
The Iron Age in the Indian History that spans between the Bronze Age and the Early-Historic Period is the hallmark of Indian culture. The characteristics of the Iron Age is marked with the dominant production and utilization of iron. Iron Age is considered as the last age in the widely known prehistoric classification as defined in Three-Age-systems namely Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Previously the Iron Age culture was placed between 1800 BCE to 700 BCE and recent AMS dates are now pushed back to second millennium BCE. The long span was due to different cultures transiting from bronze to iron at different time periods because of its high melting points of 1538°C. In course of time iron is replaced bronze, due to the availability of iron ore and technological development. It has several advantages as it is much stronger and durable than bronze. The adoption to iron has made great impact in the lives of our ancestors.

The introduction of iron varies widely depends upon the availability of iron ore and technology. Invention of Iron directly impacted changes in everyday life of the people in agriculture activity. The most important remarkable finding is that "Origin of writing" happened in this period of the late phase and these all features turned this period into the emergence of Early historic culture. The non-availability of copper ore prevented the agro pastoral community to take big leap forward in the discovery of the culture. Therefore, the copper age or chalcolithic culture ( செம்புக்காலம் ) was prevalent in the specific geographical zones. For instances the Indus valley civilisation could be cited as the finest example. The advent of Iron changed the scenario due to its availability in major front of India. The discovery of megaliths a century ago by J Babington, J.S.F. Mackenzie and others had provided the main impetus for the study of south Indian megaliths in particular. Excluding the plains of Punjab, the Indo-Ganga basin, the desert of Rajasthan and the northern part of Gujarat, megaliths are located all over India. However, they are concentrated mainly in peninsular India.

IRON AGE IN INDIA
In the later part of the second millennium BCE (North Indian Iron Age Period I), the Painted Grey Ware (PGW) made its appearance in the Ghaggar valley and the upper Ganga valley, and the black ware industry consisting of the Black-and-Red Ware (BRW) and the Black Slipped Ware (BSW) widely spread over the western part of the Ganga valley and the eastern part of Rajasthan. The emergence of BRW in the Indian peninsula around 1400 BCE may have been related to this expansion of BRW in the north. In North Indian Iron Age Period Il dating to the early first millennium BCE, Painted Grey Ware (PGW) spread into the western part of the Ganga valley resulting in the development of interaction between Painted Grey Ware (PGW) and Black and Red Ware (BRW)/Black Slipped Ware (BSW).

Iron was fully introduced in various parts of the Ganga valley by this period. In connection with the developments of social complexity that stone bead production became predominant during this period. The evidence of stone beads of the late second millennium BCE is very limited possibly due to the collapse of the Indus urban centres and urban cart production. North Indian  iron age period III ( c . the mid- first millennium BCE ) is characterised by the appearance of the Northern Black Polished Ware ( NBPW )  in the eastern part of the  Ganga Valley. This fine pottery, which belongs to the black ware tradition of BRW and BSW, is distinct  in  having thinner walls, well finished surface  with some metallic slip and the firing technique  in a reduced atmosphere  using high temperature, all indicative of a highly innovative ceramic production technology. Another significant  socio -cultural  phenomenon of this period is the emergence  of cities or urban centres.  Although the internal structure  of these settlements and how they developed  have not been well revealed  in their excavations, it is quite well evidenced that the fortification walls  at those sites had been  constructed by the late first millennium BCE ( North Indian Iron Age Period IV ). At the site of Maheth ( Sravasti ) in Uttar Pradesh, a workshop producing iron, glass beads and stone beads was revealed in the excavations suggesting that some controlled intensive craft production was being conducted inside the city.

The most significant diagnostic feature of Iron Age culture in south India was the erection of burials popularly known as megaliths. The term "megalith" etymologically means "big stone". The megaliths are basically a variety of sepulchral and commemorative monuments which are built usually of large stones either of rude or chiselled. Generally associated with a homogenous group of people using black-and-red ware and iron objects. They are either individual or collective secondary burials entombing post-exposure bones along with grave goods. The grave goods include pots, beads and other artefacts made of terracotta and semi-precious stones like carnelian, agate, quartz, jasper, etc,. Artefacts of iron, copper, gold, silver and bronze objects, etc., are also evident. However, in some cases they are neither built of large stones, nor do they contain post-exposure bones. The megaliths are mainly located in the area where the raw materials were easily available for their construction or in the elevated area or waste land often overlooking a tank or a river valley and cultivated field

TYPES OF BURIALS IN TAMIL NADU
The kaleidoscopic varieties of megalithic monuments, must have consumed considerable time and labour. They prove a colourful picture of the architecture and religious practice of our predecessors. Several tons of stone blocks or boulders had to be cut or removed, moved to chosen building sites, erected and assembled into structural arrangements. The delicate stone carving such as the port-hole and anthropomorphic figures would have required specialized craftsmen These sepulchral and commemorative monuments of megalithic period in peninsular India are quite varied and are termed on the basis of their surface indications or observations and on the basis of the details revealed through excavations. Based on, these burials are labelled as dolmen, dolmenoid-cist, cairn heap, cairn circle, stone circle, slab circle, rectangular stone-enclosure, menhir, etc. The variations noticed in burial types are probably governed by social, economic and ecological factors. Some of the megalithic burials are referred to in the early Tamil works known as the Sangam literature and epigraphs as tali or muthumakkal tali ( urn burial ), karkitai ( dolmen ), karpatukkai ( cist-burial ), karkuva ( cairn-burial ) and natukal ( menhir ).

Stone Circle - A ring of boulders marking the surface over a cist or pit burials. Occasionally double or multiple rings are seen.

Cairn Circle - A heap of earth or rubble or a mixture of both erected as a mound over cist or pit burials. They are usually found in uplands, on moorland, on mountaintops, or near waterways. These vary from loose, small piles of stones to elaborate feats of engineering

Cist burial - A cist or kist was used as encasements for dead bodies. An underground stone-lined chamber, maybe marked by cairn or menhir or stone circle on the surface. One of the stone slabs forming the side of the chamber (orthostats) may have a porthole in it.

Dolmen - A rectangular chamber erected above the ground, and made by three or four vertical slabs (orthostats) set on end, surmounted by a capstone. In case of closed chambers, one of the orthostats may have a circular, semi-circular, U-shaped, rectangular or a crude porthole in one of the orthostats. Dolmens were usually covered with earth or smaller stones to form a barrow. But in many cases that covering has weathered away, leaving only the stone "skeleton" of the burial mound intact.

Dolmenoid Cist - Similar in construction to cists and closed dolmens, except that the chamber is partly sunk into the ground.

Menhir - A single erect slab or boulder marking the spot of a burial or serving as a memorial. May be part of a stone alignment too.

Pit burial - An unlined burial, maybe marked by cairn or menhir or stone circle on the surface.

Sarcophagus burial- An elongated terracotta container with lid used for holding mortal remains. May be buried in a pit or a cist and marked by boulder circles, cairns or menhirs.

Urn burial - A terracotta urn used for holding mortal remains. Usually buried in a pit and marked by boulder circles, cairns or menhirs. In Kerala, marked by kudakkals, too.

CHRONOLOGY
Interestingly in Tamil Nadu unlike elsewhere in south India the contemporary habitational deposit of the megalithic builders is identified at many sites. The habitation sites are usually found closer to streams, rivulets or other water bodies. The excavations in those sites revealed that the Iron Age culture overlaps with the Neolithic culture and thus the Iron Age culture in south India can be dated from c. 1800/1700 BCE to 700 BCE. The excavations in the habitation sites revealed the settlement pattern, socio-economic life, art and craft, trade activities, etc,, of the contemporary society.
