Kandaswany Kovil / கந்தசாமி கோவில் / ஸ்ரீ பாலசுப்பிரமணிய சுவாமி கோயில், மணவூர் / Manavur, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Kandaswamy Temple at Manavur in Tiruvallur District, was a part of “Ashta Siddhi Temples” visit, located between Kosasthalaiyar and Koovam rivers, on the north side of Perambakkam. Apart from Shiva temples, on the way visited Perumal and Murugan temples also. This is one of the temple where Murugan is worshiped as Brahma Sastha. The other places are Pagasalai, Voyalanallur in Tiruvallur Districts.


Moolavar  : Murugan as Brahma Sastha

Some of the salient features of this temple are…. 
The temple is facing east with entrances on east and North side. Balipeedam and the elephant vahana are in front of the temple. Moolavar Murugan is in standing posture without his consorts. The upper hands are holding akkamala/ jaba mala  and kendy / Kamandalam. Lower hands are in abhaya hastam and kadi hastam. There is no koshta images. Only Chandikeswarar is in the praharam. Utsavar Murugan is with his consorts in ardha mandapam.



Moolavar seems to be of Chozha Period

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The Adhistanam is simple pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam and pattigai. The Bhitti starts with vedhika. Brahmakantha pilasters are in the bhitti with malai thongal, thamarai kattu, kalasam, thadi, kudam, mandi, palakai, veerakandam and vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with nasi kudus and viyyala vari in bhoomi desam. Bhuta ganas are in valapi. A two tires vesara Vimanam is on the bhoomi desam. Stucco images of Murugans various forms are in the 1st level and greeva koshtam. Peacocks are on the greevam.

  


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Based on the inscriptions on the kumudam, the original temple may be existed during Pallava period and reconstructed as a stone temple during Chozha period. The mukha mandapam was extended during Vijayanagara period. During Chozha period this place Manavur as Manavir, a Capital of Manavir Kottam.

10th to 13th Century Chozha period inscriptions and 15th to 16th Century Vijayanagara period inscriptions are found on the adhistanam. These Inscriptions are recorded in Tami Nattukkalvettukkal Thoguthi-XVII, Thiruvallur Mavatta Kalvettukkal thoguthi-1. 

ஸ்ரீபாலசுப்பிரமணிய சுவாமி கோயில் கருவறைத் தென்புறச் சுவரின் குமுதப்பட்டையில் உள்ள தெலுங்கு சோழர் விஜயகண்ட கோபால தேவருடைய ஆட்சியின் போது கி.பி.1255-இல் மணவில் நகரில் உள்ள சுப்பிரமணிய பிள்ளையாருக்குத் திருவமுது செய்தருள வேண்டி அரும்பாக்கிழான் உட்பட மூவர் கொடையாக நிலம் வழங்கியுள்ளனர். கோயிலுக்கு 30 கலம் நெல் ஆண்டுதோறும் வழங்கப்பட்டது.
The Telugu Chozha king Vijayaganda Göpala devar’s 9th regnal year ( 1255 CE ) inscription on the south wall of the central shrine in the Sri Balasubramaniya Swamy temple at Maavür village in Tiruttani taluk records the Three persons including Arumpäkkilän donated tax-free lands to the temple. 30 kalam paddy supplied to the temple annually for tiruvamadhu / naivedyam.

பாலசுப்பிரமணிய சுவாமி கோயில் கருவறை வடபுறச்சுவர் மற்றும் மேற்குச்சுவரில் உள்ள விஜயநகரப் பேரரசர் காலத்தில் கி.பி. 1654-இல் வெட்டப்பட்ட இக்கல்வெட்டு காஞ்சிபுரம் கச்சாலை ஈஸ்வரருக்கு சங்கப்பநாயக்கரும் மணவூர் ஊரவரும் நிலக்கொடை வழங்க முடிவெடுத்து அதனைக் கல்வெட்டாகவும் வெட்டி வைத்துள்ளதைக் கூறுகிறது. தோஷத்து என்பது தோழந்து என்றும் அகிதம் என்பது அகித்தம் என்றும் வெட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. சோழர்காலக் கல்வெட்டு போல் மிக அழகாக இக்கல்வெட்டு வெட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது.
The 17th Century Vijayanagara king Vira Sarangaraya Swamy’s period  in 1654 CE, inscription on the north and west wall of the central shrine in the same temple records that Rangappa Nayakkar and the village assembly of Manavür decided to donate lands to Känchipuram Kachalai Isvarar temple. This inscription is very beautifully carved like a Chōla inscription.

 


LEGENDS
As per the legend, Brahma was very much pride over his knowledge and job of creation of this universe. Muruga wants to teach a lesson. So Muruga asked Brahma, the meaning of Pranava mandara “OM”. When Brahma couldn’t answer correctly, Murugan, hit him on head and imprisoned him. Due to this the universe has become stand still, due to the absence of Brahma. Muruga  took the Brahma’s attributes Kendy / Kamandalam and acca mala / Japa mala and took charge of creation. This form of Murugan is called as Brahma sastha. 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri,  Vinayagar Chaturthi, etc,.

The temple at Manavur is 9 KM from Perambakkam, 18 KM from Tiruvallur, 21 KM from Arakkonam and 67 KM from Chennai Central.
Nearest Railway station is Manavur.

Hello, thanks for posting this i belong to Manavur and stay staright to murugan temple street, and there are more stories against theis temple, and we are in plan of doing kumbabishagm of this temple in process of approval from government to start the works, will keep u update on this thirupani works and kumbabaishagam works.!!
