Sri Soundareswarar Temple / சவுந்தரேஸ்வர் கோயில், திருப்பனையூர் / Thirupanaiyur, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 190th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 73rd sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri of Chozha Nadu. This place was called as Thalavanam ( Palm tree forest ) and the temple is called as Thalavaneswaram


In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva Thiyagaraja of Thiruvarur. Sundarar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva and got Gold in the form of bricks to celebrate Panguni Uthiram at Thiruvarur with Paravai Nachiyar.

Moolavar  : Sri Soundareswarar, Sri Azhahiyanathar,
                  Sri Thalavaneswarar.

Some of the important features of this temple are as follows.
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch/ Rajagopuram base with stucco images of Rishabarooder at the centre. A balipeedam and Rishabam are immediately after the entrance arch. In Koshtam Agasthiyar, Parasara maharishi, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In prakaram,  Thunai Iruntha Vinayagar ( for Karikal Chozhan ), Martruraitha Vinayagar ( similar to Thiruvarur ), Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Mahalakshmi ( Stucco images ), Shiva Lingas worshiped by Sapta Rishis, Somaskandar ( a different one with fruit in left hand ) and Chandikeswarar. A small sannathi of Thalavaneswarar Temple ( Sri Panagatteeswarar Temple ) is also in the prakaram.  

ARCHITECTURE
The main temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and a Mukha mandapam. The adhistanam is of prati banda adhistanam with Vrutha kumudam. The Prastaram is with valapi, kapotam and Viyyalavari. An eka thala dravida Vimanam is over the sanctum.
  

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have existed before 7th Century. The same was reconstructed as a stone temple during Chozha period ( 11th Century ) and extended during Pandyas and Vijayanagara period. It is believed that Karikarchozha was brought up from this place.

There are about 14 inscriptions recorded from this temple. These inscriptions belongs to Kulothunga Chozha-I, Rajathi Rajan-II, Sundara Pandyan, Parakrama Pandyan, Rajara Rajan-I and Rajarajan-II.

As per the inscriptions The place was called as Rajendra Chozha Panaiyur and Lord Shiva was called as Panayadiappan, Panangattiraivan etc,.

Vikrama Pandyan’s 5th reign year inscription records the endowments of land and house lands gifted to Adhi Chandeswarar temple.

Sundara Pandya period inscription records that there was a sandhi / kattalai in the name of king, for naivedyam, 5 veli land was gifted to this temple. This is a copy of the old inscription and the inscription last word finishes with Thulyam ( copy ).

Rajathirajan-II’s 10th reign year inscription records the gift of land as irayili to the Azhagu Devar by Chozha Panaiyur nattuKon and Kotramangalamudayan Adalvallan.

Kulothunga Chozha-I, period inscription records the  endowment of 6 ma land as irayili gifted to this Azhakiya Devar. With the land gifted 5 Chatti Choru ( 5 pot of cooked rice ) to be offered to Thabasis and Sivayogis. Peruvari, Silvari, Echchoru Kootrarisi Vasalil pontha kudimai  for the same 6 kasu was received and the land was gifted as Irayili.

Kulothunga Chozha-I’s period inscription records the land measuring 600 kuli was gifted to this temple of Adhi Chandeswarar as irayili after purchase by the 5 people Panaiyur Kizhvan Eduthapatham Koothadi alias Gangaikonda Chozha Panayuradaya Velan, Panaiyur Kizhavan VelanKanapura Devan, Panaiyur Kizhavn Velan Jananathan and Panaiyur Kizhavan Kondan eduththapadam.

Kulothunga Chozha-I’s 5th reign year inscription records the sale of land measuring 6 makani munthirikai keelarai as Irayili after getting 7 kasu to recite Thirupalli Ezhuchi at Adhi Chandeswarar sannathi.

Most of the other inscriptions records the Gift of lands as sale, after getting money, for Poojas, worship naivedyam, burning lamps etc. There are many fragment inscriptions,  from which, we couldn’t get full details.
Maha Kumbabishekam was conducted on 26th August 1973 after renovations.



LEGENDS
It is believed that the Shiva Lingam was installed by Sage Parashara. Lord Shiva was praised as Sri Thalavaneswarar ( Thala panai – a variety of Palm tree ). It is believed that Maha Lakshmi, Sage Parasarar, Sapta rishis ( Kaushikkar, Kashyapa, Bharadwaja, Gauthamar, Agasthiyar, Athiri and Birugu ), Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal, Muchukunda Chakravarthy and Karikala Chozhan worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.  

As per the request of Paravai Nachiyar, Sundarar got gold from Lord Shiva for the celebration of Panguni Uthiram thirunal at Thiruvarur and Sung தம்மையே புகழ்ந்து and worshiped Lord Shiva of Thirupugalur and came to Thirupanaiyur. Lord Shiva gave darshan out side of this place. Sundarar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva as “அரங்காடவல்லார் அழகியார்” and got blessings.

Saptha rishis, Parasara Muni, Mahalakshmi, Karikarchozhan lived in this place and worshiped lord Shiva of this temple. In memory of this legend, this place Manicka Nachiyar thittu / elevated place on the North east direction of this Village is called as “Santhitha Theerththam- சந்தித்த தீர்த்தம்”

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on, Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Avani ( Aug – Sept ), Navaratri in the month Purattasi ( Sept – Oct ), Skanda Sashti and Annabhishekam in the month Aippasi ( Oct – Nov ), Thirukarthigai in the month Karthigai ( Nov – Dec ), Thiruvathirai in the month Margazhi ( Dec – Jan ), Makara Sankranti in the month Thai ( Jan – Feb ), Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ), Panguni Uthiram in the month Panguni ( March – April ) and monthly pradoshams.

Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple / பசுபதீஸ்வரர் கோயில், திருக்கொண்டீஸ்வரம் / Thirukondeswaram / Thirukandeeswaram, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 189th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 72nd sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri of Chozha Nadu. This place once called as Thirukondeeswaram, now called as Thirukandeeswaram. 


In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal went to Thiruvanjiyam after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruveezhimizhalai. He didn’t mention this temple in particular. Since we have got the hymns on this temple and this place is on the way between the above two temples. Hence Appar worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple also.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of sanctum sanctorum. An arch with stucco images are above the sanctum entrance. Moolavar is small. Moolavar came from earth when Ambal as cow hit the earth through with her horns ( There is scar / (வெடிப்பு ) is on the top of moolavar ). In Koshtam Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai. 

In prakaram Vinayagar, Subramaniar, Gajalakshmi, Brahmapureeswarar, Agastheeswarar, Viswanathar with  Visalakshi, Bhairavar, Nagar, Thirugnanasambandar, Suriyan. Jyeshta Devi, Navagrahas, Aabathsahaya maharishi, Jurahareswarar with three legs / thiruvadikal. Bas reliefs of Kamadhenu, Ambal worshiping Lord Shiva are on the pillars of the mandapa.

ARCHITECTURE
The main temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and artha mandapam. The adhistanam is of simple pada bandha adhistanam with 3 patta kumuda. The Bhitti starts with Vethika. Vishnu kantha pilasters are on the Bhitti. A 2 tier nagara Vimanam is on the sanctum. All the mandapas are of Vavval nethi style. Dwarapalaka's are made of stucco. The Sthala purana is painted on the ceiling of artha mandapam.

The Saka 1439 ie 1517 CE Vijayanagara King Veera Krishnadeva Maharayar inscription records the capture of Udayagiri fort and arrest of Thirumalairakuthar.

Maha Kumbabishekam was conducted on 10th September 2006 after renovations.

LEGENDS
As per the sthala purana, Ma  Parvati as Cow came to this place  in search of Lord Shiva. She excavates the earth with horns. The Horns hits the Shiva Linga and blood was  gushing out. Ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva with milk from her utter and healed the wound. A Scar can be seen still on moolavar. Hence Lord Shiva is called as "Pasupatheeswarar". Since ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva in the form of Cow ( ferocious ), this place is called as Kondeecharam.

As per the sthala purana this is one of the 4 sthalas / temples, where Guru ( Pragaspathi also known as Vyazhan of Navagrahas ) worshiped Lord Shiva.   

In another legend, Lord Shiva is in the form of Jwarahareswar and cured fever related ailments. Hence it is believed that those who are suffering from fever will get relieved if do abhishekam with hot water and offer cooked boiled rice as naivedyam.

This is one of the seven Lord Shiva temples and all of them are Paadal Petra Sthalams, which are ends with “Charam”.

Sri Madhuvaneswarar Temple / மதுவனேஸ்வரர் கோயில் / Nannilathu Perungoil / நன்னிலம், Nannilam, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 188th Thevara Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 71st sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri  of Chozha Nadu. This temple is on the southern banks river Mudikondan.
 

In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that after getting bricks as gold at Thirupugalur, Sundarar went to Thiruvarur after worshiping Lord shiva of Thirupanaiyur on the way and celebrated Panguni uthiram Thiruvizha with Paravai nachiyar. From Thiruvarur, Sundarar came to this temple.

பலநாள் அமர்வார் பரமர்திருஅருளால் அங்கு நின்றும் போய்
சிலைமா மேரு வீரனார் திருநன்னிலத்துச் சென்று எய்தி

Sundarar and Vallalar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. Sundarar records that this temple was built by the Chozha King Ko Chengat Chozha. There are Many type of temples like Gaja birushta Vimana temple, Kara Koil, kukudikoil, Perungoil, Mada Koil, etc. In this hymns Sundarar records this temple as Perungoil.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..
The Temple is facing east without Rajagopuram. Dwajasthambam, Rishabam and balipeedam are after the entrance and in front of Ambal Sannathi. Moolavar on the square avudayar worshiped by Brahma. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, Durgai in the ground level. In the Upper level only Dakshinamurthy.

In prakaram Brahma worshiped  Mahadeva Lingam, Agasthiyar worshiped Agastheeswarar, Vinayagar, Murugan with his consorts, Gajalakshmi, Somaskandar, Bhairavar, Suriyan, Saneeswarar, Chitragupta, Navagrahas and Chandikeswarar. Chandikeswarar is with his wives. Only picture of Natarajar is available in the Sabha mandapam.

All the mandapas are of Vavvalnethi type

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
This is one of the maada / Perungoil temple built by  Ko Chenkat Chozhan ( செம்பியர் கோன் ), which has 18 steps. Sundarar also records the same in his hymns. Also there are many type of temples like Gaja birushta Vimana temple, Kara Koil, kukudikoil, mada Koil, Perungoil etc. In this hymns Sundarar records this temple as “Perungoil”.  As per Thevaram this temple was called as நன்னிலத்து பெருங்கோயில்”

கருவரை போல்அரக்கன் கயி லைம்மலைக் கீழ்க்கதற
ஒருவிர லால்அடர்த்தின் அருள் செய்த உமாபதிதான்
திரைபொரு பொன்னிநன்னீர்த் துறை வன்திகழ் செம்பியர்கோன்
நரபதி நன்னிலத்துப் பெருங்கோயில் நயந்தவனே.

கோடுயர் வெங்களிற்றுத் திகழ் கோச்செங் கணான் செய்கோயில்
நாடிய நன்னிலத்துப் பெருங்கோயில் நயந்தவனைச்
சேடியல் சிங்கிதந்தை சடை யன்திரு வாரூரன்
பாடிய பத்தும்வல்லார் புகு வார்பர லோகத்துள்ளே

A 9th to 10th Century Rajakesari or Parakesari Varman’s period inscription records the endowment of  burning a perpetual lamp at this temple for which 12 Kalanju gold was gifted by one Naranan. The same was received by three people and agreed to burn from the interest earned. The first and last lines of the inscription was damaged. There is a mention about Thara Lamp in the last line..

The another 18th to 19th century inscription was damaged very heavily.
Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 15th September 1996.

LEGENDS
This place was called as Madhuvanam, Devaranyam, Sundaravanam and Birukathpuram during ancient times.

Suriyan, Agasthiyar and Devas ( in the form of honey bees ) worshiped Lord Shiva in the form of bees, not able to bear the torture of Viruthirasuran.

As per the legend, Lord Shiva turned Devas in to honey bees and bee hive in the form of Shiva Linga. The Devas stayed in side the bee hive Shiva Linga, so that they will not be visible to the demon. Hence this place was called as Madhuvanam ( madhu is also called as honey in Tamil ), Lord Shiva was called as "Madhuvaneswarar" and Ambal as "Madhuvana Nayaki".

It is believed that Indra worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple to get relieved from the Brahmahathi dosha, due to killing of Viruthirasuran.  Indra, Brahma, Suriyan Sage Agasthiyar and Devas in the form of honey bees worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

Saint Sundarar’s Guru pooja on the Aadi Swathi star day in the month Aadi ( July – Aug ) is also celebrated in a grand manner.
